Panthers Sweep Softball

Hornets Fall, 4-0 and 4-3

FERRUM, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its week Sunday by dropping a pair of ODAC contests at Ferrum.
 
Shenandoah (5-11, 2-2 ODAC) lost, 4-0, in the opener before Ferrum (14-6, 4-0) was a 4-3 victor in the nightcap.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
The Hornets were held to just one hit, a leadoff single by Danielle McNeill, in dropping the 4-0 decision.
 
McNeill led off the game with an infield single only to see FC pitcher Lyndsey Sears retire the next seven batters in order before Lily Richichi drew a one out walk in the third.
 
Sears (9-3) struck out four, walked one and faced four batters over the minimum in earning the victory.
 
Megan Scalley (3-5) gave up the four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks for the Hornets. She struck out three in her five innings of work.
 
Ferrum scored its runs with two in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
 
GAME TWO RECAP
Shenandoah scored two runs on two hits in the first inning of the nightcap before the Panthers answered with one in their half of the frame and three more in the third.
 
SU cut the deficit in half with one in the fourth but could not bring the game back to level. The Hornets did have runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth.
 
Aleisha Whipple had two of Shenandoah's five hits with McNeill, Arlene Miller, and BayLee Jenkins all getting one each. Jenkins also drove in one run with her single of the middle in the first.
 
Hannah Maltos (1-6) took the loss. She gave up four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Kayla Stephenson pitched the final 3 2/3 and only allowed one hit.
 
UP NEXT
Shenandoah begins a 10-game homestand on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. non-league doubleheader versus Mary Baldwin.
