WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 18 Shenandoah University saw its seven-game baseball winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 9-2 non-league loss to Oswego (N.Y.) State.
Â
Originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. as the third game of the Mr. V Memorial Classic, the game start was delayed by two hours as Oswego (3-2) needed 4:55 of game time to dispatch Keystone, 27-14, in the second game of the tournament.
Â
IN BRIEF
The Lakers banged out 23 hits and five home runs in that win over Keystone, and rode that momentum into the late afternoon contest against SU.
Â
Oswego hit another three home runs, including two from Paul Tammaro in the first and second innings, to lead wire-to-wire over the Hornets.
Â
The Lakers scored two runs in the first, one in the second, and two more in the fourth before Shenandoah got on the board with two runs on three hits in the fifth.
Â
Kooper Anderson drove in the first run with a double to right before
Matt Moon followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice that retired Anderson at third.
Â
In the seventh, Shenandoah had its best chance to get back into the game by loading the bases with one out. Unfortunately for the home fans, OSU reliever Tony Poveda got
Frankie Ritter on a hard lineout to second and
Henry Delavergne to ground out to short.
Â
Lakers starter Kieran Finnegan (1-0) pitched the initial 6 1/3 and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Â
Hornets starter
Reilly Owen (1-1) took the loss. He gave up five runs (three earned) on three hits and six walks in 4.0 innings of work. He struck out seven.
Â
Anderson had two of the Hornets five hits on the day.
