Softball Sweeps Saints

Hornets Win, 8-0 and 1-0

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its regular season Sunday by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Marymount University.

Shenandoah (14-22) was an 8-0 winner in the opener before completing the sweep with a 1-0 win in the nightcap over the Saints (14-22).

GAME ONE RECAP
SU scored scored six runs in the first and two in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead and end the game early due to the NCAA mercy rule.

First-year Danielle McNeill ended the contest with one out in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to left. The dinger, McNeill's first of the season, plated Lily Richichi with the seventh run. Richichi reached on single down the left field line.

Senior Megan Scalley, one of four women recognized prior to the game, tossed a complete game two-hitter in her final appearance at Rotary Field.

Scalley (6-10) struck out eight and walked two. She missed her second no-hitter of the season by allowing singles in the first and sixth. She retired the Saints in order in the first, second, fourth and fifth.

Shenandoah scored its six runs in the first on five hits with Richichi clearing the bases on a double to right center.

BayLee Jenkins had a two-run double to left center and Taylor Glover an RBI single to center to get the day started.

Eight of the nine SU starters had at least one hit with Richichi and Arlene Miller getting two each.

GAME TWO RECAP
Game two was much closer, with the two teams combining for just 10 hits in the Hornets 1-0 victory.

Richichi had the game's lone RBI with a single to right in the fourth to pinch runner Rachael Blumenschine from second. Blumenschine ran for designated player Nikki Stone, who led off the SU fourth with a walk and was sacrificed to second.

First-year Hannah Maltos went the distance to earn the victory. Maltos (3-9) struck out three and scattered four hits in the complete game performance. She retired the Saints in order in the first and fourth.

Bower had two of the Hornets six hits.
