WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team split with visiting Randolph College in an ODAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (8-16, 3-7 ODAC) walked off game one before falling to the WildCats (7-22, 1-7) in game two with the tying run standing in the on-deck circle.
GAME ONE RECAP
Tiffany Bower ripped a double to center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to score
Danielle McNeill and
Kayla Stephenson with the tying and winning runs, respectively. McNeill had reached on a walk and a fielder's choice before moving up 60 feet on a wild pitch.
The seventh inning heroics made a winner of Savannah Thorne (3-0). Thorne pitched the final three innings and scattered two hits while striking out three.
Randolph scored its lone run on three hits in the first.
Bower, McNeill, Taylor Glover, Taylor Smith, and Lily Richichi had the Hornets hits.
GAME TWO RECAP
The WildCats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a RBI triple and single in back-to-back at-bats in the opening frame of game two.
With bases loaded in the fifth, Kayla Love singled up the right side driving in two runs giving Randolph a 5-0 advantage.
Shenandoah responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own. Aleisha Whipple powered a ball to center field for a RBI sacrifice fly which also saw Taylor Glover advance to third.
Glover didn't have to wait long to cross home plate. Lily Richichi singled to right field driving in Glover for the RBI and cutting the deficit to just three.
After Randolph scored two more in the sixth, BayLee Jenkins homered to left center field making the score 7-3 in favor of the visitors.
Down four, SU was able to get two runners on base with just one out in the inning.
With the Hornets tying run waiting in the on-deck circle, Danielle Shannon earned her first save of the season forcing two straight ground balls to wrap up the 7-3 victory for Randolph.
