LEXINGTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team dropped a tri-match on the road this morning after taking on Washington and Lee and Eastern Universities. The Hornets (8-17, 2-10) would drop both matches in three sets.
GAME ONE WASHINGTON AND LEE
Jillian Warter led the way for the Hornets with six kills in the game. Behind Warter,
Brooke Gast and
Kylie Danella each chipped in with three kills apiece. The only ace in the game came from
Cheyenne Price. Aalilyah Chunn led all players with five blocks, with
Regan Minney and
Cheyenne Price following behind with three and two blocks, respectively.
Abby Lichtenfels led the Hornets with seven assists with Danella adding five assists of her own.
Natalie Reader, from the libero position, led the Hornets with 14 digs.
Regan Minney contributed with nine digs and
Emma Thompson came up with seven digs.
The Generals' offense came out swinging from the gate and the Hornets found themselves in a hole, early to start the first set. Shenandoah picked up kills from
Brooke Gast and
Regan Minney, but could not overcome the 19-12 W&L lead. The Generals would go on a six-point run to take the first set 25-12.
The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 and eventually take a 9-8 lead after kills from Warter, Danella, and Gast, but the Generals would then rattle off nine straight points to take a 19-10 lead. The Hornets would pick up another kill from Danella, and take advantage of W&L errors, but the Generals would take advantage of a 6-3 run and finish the second set 25-14.
In the third, the Hornets would find themselves down 8-3, but every time Shenandoah would score, W&L would go on another run. The Hornets would do everything in their power to try and claw and fight their way to force a fourth set using kills from
Emma Thompson,
Aaliyah Chunn,
Regan Minney and
Jillian Warter, but the damage was done. Shenandoah was down 19-12 before the Generals would finish with six straight to sweep the match.
GAME TWO EASTERN
Jillian Warter would lead the way again for the Hornets with seven kills for the match.
Regan Minney added six kills of her own, while
Kylie Danella chipped in with four kills.
Cara Butler led the Hornet with two aces with
Emma Thompson and
Kylie Danella each adding one. Danella dished out a team-high 13 assists with
Abby Lichtenfels contributing with seven assists.
Regan Minney led all players with 14 digs with
Natalie Reader chipping in with seven digs and
Cara Butler adding six digs, respectively.
In the first set, the Hornets and Eagles traded points and were evenly matched with the score tied at 10, using kills from Warter, Danella, and Gast. After an Aalliyah Chunn kill to give the Hornets a 11-10 lead, three major runs to take a 23-14 lead. The Hornets would pick up three more kills in the match, but the Eagles would take the first set 25-18.
In the second, the teams continued to trade points back and forth until the score was tied at 13. But again, the Eagles would use their high-powered offense and finish the second set on a 10-3 run to take the second set 25-16.
Needing to pick up a win in the third to push the match one set further, the Hornets would find themselves quickly down 13-5 after kills from Warter, Chunn, Minney, and Danella.
Amber Shifflett picked up a kill to bring the score to 14-7, but Eastern then would rattle off four-straight points to an 18-7 lead. With the Hornets down 22-10, Shenandoah used kills from
Ava Pannullo, and two aces from
Cara Butler, and a kill by Warter for five-straight points, but the Eagles would get the final three points of the set to take the match.

The Hornets will hit the road for a mid-week, nonconference matchup with Gallaudet on Wednesday evening.
