Hornets Set Indoor Records in First Meet of Season

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University track and field programs hosted the Holiday Kickoff Open on Sunday to begin its 2023-24 indoor season.

The Hornets won eight events while breaking several school records throughout the afternoon into the evening.

WOMEN'S RECAP
During the 3,000-meter race, Madeline Lotts won the event and crushed the school record in the process. Lotts ran a time of 10:14.17 which is just over 33 seconds faster than the previous record. In that same race, Makenna Thrush finished third at 10:25.54, setting a new PR.

Janelle Anderson took home the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 8.09 seconds after running an 8.14 in prelims. Her time in the finals was 0.02 seconds off of her personal best.

In the field, Kiara Felston broke her own school record with a heave of 17.19 meters in the weight throws, winning the event. Jessica Redfrey finished second, landing a toss of 13.67. Felston would go on to break another program record in the shot put with a shot of 11.76 meters.

At the high jumps, Katya Hoover hit the mark of 1.63 meters for the win which is just 0.01 off the school record.

The women's 4x400 relay team won their event at 4:20.52, hitting the finish line 4.01 seconds sooner than the second-place squad.

Mackenzie Plowman came in second during the one-mile race, breaking her PR with a time of 5:30.13. Her previous best came last winter at the NYU DIII Invitational.

Another school record was set over at the pole vault as first-year Elise Kann landed a vault of 2.30 meters. Kann marked one of four school records broken today on the women's side.

In the finals of the long jump, SU's best finisher was Alexis Hubbard with a jump of 5.11 meters.

MEN'S RECAP
The lone school record to be broken today for the men came from William Crowder. Crowder, running in the 60m dash, hit the record of 6.82 seconds in the semi-finals of the event. The sprinter also ran well in the 200m, winning the event with a time of 22.80.

At the men's high jump, Mekhi Mims earned the victory with his jump of 1.73m. Teammate Jiyon Watts came in third at 1.70m.

A personal record was set for Zak McIntyre today in the weight throws as he landed a toss of 13.53 meters, 0.74 better than his previous best.

Ethan Harrower set a PR as well when he came in second place during the men's 3k, as he finished with a time of 9:00.84.

In the pit, Elijah West (6.28m), Zachary Hurd (6.05m), and Aymar Bisseck (6.04m) finished second, third, and fourth respectively. The long jump from Hurd set a new PR for him. Kristian Moore placed third in the triple jump later in the day.
