Baseball Sweeps Pride

Hornets Win, 13-2 and 3-1

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 21/24 Shenandoah University opened up its 2023 baseball season Saturday with a non-league doubleheader sweep over Widener (Pa.).

Shenandoah (2-0) was a 13-2 victor in the opener before finishing off the sweep of the Pride (1-2) with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Hornets scored one run in the first and another in the third before breaking open the contest with a four-run fourth. SU continued to pour it on and closed out the scoring with three runs each in the fifth and sixth.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club banged out 13 hits in the game one victory with Kooper Anderson going 3 for 3 with four runs scored. Gavin Horning, Ryan Clawson, and Haden Madagan had two hits each with Madagan hitting a two-run home run in the sixth.

Senior Jacob Faivre (1-0) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Jacob Bell (SV, 1) earned the save with three innings of relief. He struck out five and gave up one run on two hits and one walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

Reilly Owen and Tristian Everett combined for a one-hitter in the game two, 3-1, victory.

Owen (1-0) threw 65 pitches over the first five innings, blanking the Pride while striking out five, before Everett (SV, 1) got the final six outs and gave up the one run on one-out home run in the seventh.

Owen retired the side in order in the first, second, third, and fifth innings. Everett did the same in the sixth.

The SU offense had six hits with Colby Martin, Pearce Bucher, and Kooper Anderson all driving in runs. Anderson put Shenandoah on top to stay with a one-out home run in the third with Martin driving in the game-winning run with a ground-rule double to plate Gavin Horning.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah continues its season-opening homestand next Saturday with a non-league doubleheader versus Misericordia.
