Baseball Sweeps Cougars

Hornets Win, 6-2 and 11-5

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 21/24 Shenandoah University baseball continued its winning ways Saturday by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Misericordia University.

Shenandoah (4-0) was a 6-2 winner in the opener before finishing off the Cougars (0-2) with an 11-5 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Two runs in the first, along with one in the third, gave the Hornets the lead for good in the opener.

Misericordia cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth only to see SU answer back with two of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Gavin Horning got the two-run first started with a triple to right center and scored when designated hitter Colby Martin singled to short.

Martin wasted little time in advancing to third as he stole second and moved up another 90 feet as the attempted pickoff throw at first base sailed down the right field line.

Martin then trotted home on Pearce Bucher's sacrifice fly to right.

In the third, Martin again brought home Horning, this time on a single to right center. Horning had reached on a two-out double to left.

In the fifth, another Horning triple, this one to right, brought home Kooper Anderson. Anderson had reached on an error and was sacrificed to second.

Martin posted his third RBI of the day on a groundout to second to plate Horning.

Anderson plated the hosts final run with a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Kyle Lisa. Lisa had led off the SU eighth with a double down the left field line.

Jacob Bell (1-0) was the winner with 4 2/3 innings of relief work. He allowed five hits and struck out five after taking over for Jacob Faivre. Faivre gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 while striking out six.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Hornets banged out 16 hits in the 11-5, game two victory with Frankie Ritter and Pearce Bucher both getting three each.

Horning continued his strong afternoon with a 2-for-5, 4 RBI performance that included a two-run home run in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club scored three runs in the second and four in the fourth to jump out to a 7-1 lead before adding one more in the fifth and a three-spot in the sixth.

Eight of the nine starters hit safely in the contest and the top four hitters in the lineup were a combined 9 for 18 with five RBI and five runs scored.

Tristan Everett (1-0), the third of four SU pitchers, earned the win with an inning and two-thirds of relief work. Everett allowed two runs (one earned) on four walks and struck out two.

Matt House got the final nine outs to pick up the save. He struck out four.

Anderson, Lisa, and Haden Madagan joined Horning in getting a pair of hits. Madagan also drove in a pair.
