WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2023 season Saturday with a 17-5 non-league home victory over Meredith College.
Junior Ansley Buckner scored eight times for the Hornets (1-0) in earning the win over 2022 NCAA Tournament participant Meredith (0-1).
IN BRIEF
After
Reilly Cisar opened the scoring with a goal off of an
Emma Stiffler assist 80 seconds into the contest, Shenandoah took control with a four-goal run from the 10:33 to the 3:04 marks of the first. That assist, one of six on the afternoon for Stiffler, makes her the program's all-time leader in that category.
Buckner had two of those goals with Cisar and
Madison Re adding the others.
The Avenging Angels opened the second quarter scoring at 13:59, but SU scored four of the final five goals of the stanza to take a 9-3 lead into the break. Buckner had three of the goals in this half-ending run.
It was all SU in the second half with the Hornets scoring four straight to start the period and kick in the running clock. From 11:38 mark of the third, when
Amy Bell set up
Gabriella Raspanti for the first of her two goals, the Hornets held at least a nine-goal advantage.
In the fourth, Re, Cisar, and Raspanti all scored unassisted to provide the final margin.
Buckner led the victors with eight goals with Cisar adding three, Re and Raspanti two each with
Amy Bell and
Emily Lerch scoring one time apiece.
Bell, Lerch, and Re all had one assist to back up Stiffler's record-breaking performance.
Shenandoah outshot the Avenging Angels 26-19 and had a 15-7 edge on groundballs. Meredith won 16 of the game's 24 draws.
Hornets goalkeeper
Ashley MacFarlane made 10 saves.
