WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Misericordia University pitched a pair of shutouts in sweeping a non-league softball doubleheader from Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon.
Misericordia (2-0) was a 1-0 winner in the opener before finishing off the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory over the Hornets (1-2) in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Cougars strung together three hits in the sixth, half of their total for the game, to score the game's lone run.
Hornets starter
Kayla Stephenson (1-2) was outstanding, striking out 10 and allowing the one run on six hits and three walks in the complete game showing.
SU was held to three hits with
Paige Eagleton,
Kristen Blee, and
Lily Richichi all getting one hit each.
Misericordia pitcher Alexa McHugh (1-0) also went the distance, striking out 13 and walking one.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Cougars scored four unearned runs, one each in the second and third and two in the sixth, to earn the 4-0 victory.
Shenandoah outhit Misericordia, but committed five errors that led to the four unearned runs.
Taylor Smith (0-1) went the distance, allowing the four unearned runs on two hits and two walks, and was 2 for 3 at the plate.
Eagleton,
Arlene Miller and
Tiffany Bower had the other SU hits.
Marisa Kelly (1-0) tossed the first six innings for the Cougars to earn the win. She struck out two and gave up four hits.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah plays in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Raleigh, North Carolina Saturday and Sunday. The Hornets open the four-game tourney with Arcadia University Saturday at noon.
