WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 11/24 Shenandoah University ran its season-opening baseball winning streak to eight games Wednesday afternoon with a 7-5 non-league victory over Mount Aloysius.
Â
With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, junior designated hitter
Colby Martin drilled a Chris Hasse offering 362 feet over the left field fence to push the Hornets (8-0) past Mount Aloysius (0-2).
Â
IN BRIEF
Martin's blast, his first of the season, was one of two that SU hit on the day.
Gavin Horning had the first home run, to straightaway center and his second of the spring, in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 1-1.
Â
Horning was intentionally walked with the bases empty and one out the eighth in order to pitch to Martin. Martin, who finished the day 4 for 5 with a double and three runs scored, needed just two pitches to give the Hornets the lead for good.
Â
Parker Farrington (2-0), the fourth Shenandoah pitcher of the day, got the final seven outs for the victory. He struck out five, including two of the three MAC hitters in the ninth, and only allowed one hit.
Â
Pearce Bucher and
Haden Madagan had two hits each in Shenandoah' 12-hit afternoon.
Â
Bucher, Madagan,
Ryan Clawson, and
Tyler Blittersdorf all drove in runs in addition to Horning and Martin.
