WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 9/24 Shenandoah University opened up its ODAC baseball slate Saturday by splitting a home doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney.
Shenandoah (11-2, 1-1 ODAC) bounced back from a 5-3 loss in the opener to take out the Tigers (7-7, 1-1) with 13-6 victory in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
Shenandoah outhit the Tigers, 12-5, but left nine runners on base and hit into a pair of double plays as Hampden-Sydney took the 5-3 victory.
H-SC starter Owen Tappy (1-0) went the distance, scattering the 12 hits while walking just one and striking out seven. One of the Hornets runs was unearned.
The Tigers scored two runs in the third to chase Hornets starter
Jacob Faivre, and after SU tied it with a two-run fifth, scored three runs off of three Shenandoah pitchers in the eighth to go on top to stay.
Shenandoah answered with one run in the bottom of the frame but stranded a pair of runners in scoring position as Tappy worked through his troubles with a pair of strikeouts.
Kooper Anderson and
Gavin Horning both had three hits with the latter needing just a home run to complete hitting for a cycle. Horning's triple to right in the fifth tied the game at 2-2.
Frankie Ritter and
Pearce Bucher added two hits each.
GAME TWO RECAP
Shenandoah jumped on the Tigers for five runs on four hits in the second of the eventual 13-6 win, but needed to rally as H-SC answered back with one run in the third and fourth in the fourth.
Coach
Kevin Anderson's club re-took control of the contest with three runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding two in the fifth, one in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.
SU had double-digit hits for the second time on the afternoon, banging out 14 versus four Hampden-Sydney pitchers. Bucher led the way with a 4 for 4, 4 RBI contest with
Ryan Clawson adding three hits in three at-bats and both Ritter and
Dillon Partin two each.
Clawson, a grad transfer from Hampden-Sydney, drove in a pair of runs versus his undergraduate alma mater.
Bucher drove in the game-winning run with a single to left in the fourth.
Jackson Sherman (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed three hits but did not give up a run and struck out one.

The Hornets season-opening homestand concludes Monday with a 3 p.m. non-league contest versus No. 2 Salisbury.
