DANVILLE, Va. – No. 5 Shenandoah University opened up its weekend ODAC baseball series at Averett University with a 7-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (18-2, 5-1 ODAC) used three-spots in the fifth and seventh innings to dispatch the Cougars (3-14-1, 0-6).
IN BRIEF
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, the Hornets scored three runs on one hit, a walk, a hit batsman, and an AU error.
Kooper Anderson drove in the first run by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That brought home
Ryan Clawson, who led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second when Averett pitcher Nathan Comer threw wide to second base on
Dillon Partin's attempted sacrifice bunt.
Partin scored one pitch later on a wild pitch, and after
Gavin Horning fouled out,
Colby Martin brought home
Frankie Ritter with a sacrifice fly to right center.
In the seventh, Shenandoah scored the three runs on two hits, two hit batsmen, and a sacrifice fly. Martin had the big hit with a two-run single down the right field line to expand the lead out to 6-2 and
Pearce Bucher completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left.
Gavin Horning, who was hit by pitch to load the bases, scored on that play.
Ritter had two of the Hornets seven hits with Martin driving in three runs.
Jacob Faivre (4-0) pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out six.
Brian Ferreira pitched the final four innings to earn his first save of the season. He gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out three.
