WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 20 Cortland (N.Y.) State scored two runs in each of the first three innings Saturday on its way to an 11-2 victory over No. 11/24 Shenandoah University.
The Red Dragons (4-3) held SU (9-1) to just two hits in earning their second victory Saturday at the Mr. V Memorial Classic presented by United Bank.
IN BRIEF
After Cortland scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first, Shenandoah answered back in its half of the frame with two runs on one hit. The Hornets scored the two runs without the benefit of that hit as SU combined a
Frankie Ritter walk, a
Gavin Horning hit by pitch, and a wild pitch to both Ritter and Horning in scoring position.
Colby Martin and
Pearce Bucher followed with RBI groundouts to tie the game.
The Red Dragons took a lead they would not relinquish with two runs on three hits in the second before chasing SU starter
Reilly Owen (1-1) with another two runs three hits in the third.
Cortland added on with three runs in the sixth and one each in the eighth and ninth to provide the final margin. They finished with 17 hits.
Ryan Clawson and
Matt House had singles up the middle in the first and second innings, respectively, for the Hornets two hits.
