WINCHESTER, Va. –  No. 11/24 Shenandoah University completed its weekend of play Sunday with a 5-3 victory over No. 22 Oswego State in the final game of the Mr. V Memorial Classic baseball tournament.
Â
Shenandoah (10-1) broke the game open with a two-run eighth, but didn't need all of the offense as starter
Jacob Bell was outstanding against the Lakers (1-5).
Â
IN BRIEF
Â
Bell (2-0) tossed 8.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine in his 103-pitch performance. Bell retired Oswego in order in the first, second, third, sixth, seventh, and eighth and set the final 11 hitters he faced down without allowing a baserunner.
Â
After Oswego put together a two-out rally to score a pair of unearned runs in the top of the ninth off of
Parker Farrington, senior
Kyle Lisa came on to induce a game-winning fielder's choice. He did allow one inherited runner to score.
Â
Shenandoah scored its initial run in the second as
Ryan Clawson drew a two-out walk, moved to second on
Haden Madagan's single through the left side and then scored as Stephen Drengwicz singled up the middle.
Â
Bell was perfect the first time through the order and when Oswego threatened in the fourth, fielded his position perfectly to cut down the potential tying run on an attempted one-out safety squeeze.
Â
In the sixth,
Frankie Ritter led off the frame with a triple into the right field corner before coming home on a
Gavin Horning sacrifice fly to center.
Â
Shenandoah put another insurance run on the board in the seventh by combining two hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Clawson led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored as pinch hitter
Tyler Blittersdorf singled back through the box against a drawn-in infield.
Â
In the eighth, a two-out, two-run Madagan double into the gap in left center gave the Hornets to some breathing room. Madagan plated
Kyle Lisa, who reached on a throwing error, and Clawson, who was hit by a pitch.
Â
Clawson and Madagan both had two hits.
Â
UP NEXT
Shenandoah is off until opening its ODAC slate Saturday in a noon home doubleheader versus Hampden-Sydney.
