Women's Lax Sinks Captains

Hornets Win, 13-9

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team earned its first-ever victory at Christopher Newport University Saturday afternoon with a 13-9 non-league victory over the Captains.

Shenandoah (3-1) led wire-to-wire in downing CNU (2-2) for the second consecutive season but for just the fifth time in 25 lifetime matchups.

IN BRIEF
Grad student Emma Stiffler led off the contest with an unassisted tally at 14:16 before Gabriella Raspanti set up Reilly Cisar at 8:21 to give the Hornets a two-goal advantage.

After the Captains got on the board with a buzzer-beating goal at the end of the first, the Hornets reeled off three straight to push the lead to 5-1 with three minutes to play in the opening half.

Stiffler, Emily Lerch, and Paige Padberg had the SU goals in this run with Ainsley Buckner setting up Padberg for the final tally.

Christopher Newport, with two goals to finish the second and one more to start the third, was able to cut the deficit to one, 5-4, but would get no closer.

Buckner, from Stiffler, started a 4-1 Shenandoah run from the 7:29 to :58 marks of the third to put Coach Lindsey Lutz' club firmly in control.

SU held at least a two-goal lead the remainder of the contest.

In a game-closing 3-1 run over the final 7:54, Raspanti had a pair of woman-advantage goals and Lerch scored unassisted.

CNU outshot the Hornets, 28-22 while the two teams split 28 groundballs and 24 draw controls.

SU goalkeeper Ashley MacFarlane made 13 saves.
