Softball Drops a Pair

Hornets Fall 6-3 to Maryville and 5-0 to Piedmont

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its play Sunday at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic Sunday with losses to Maryville (Tenn.) and Piedmont.

Shenandoah (2-5) dropped a 6-3 decision to Maryville (4-5) in Sunday's opening contest before Piedmont (7-3) was a 5-0 victor in the Hornets final game of the tournament.

MARYVILLE RECAP
After SU and the Scots both scored two runs in the third, Maryville took the lead for good with a three-spot in the fourth on its way to the 6-3 win.

Shenandoah answered back with one in the bottom of the fifth before MC scored a run on two hits in the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.

The Hornets two runs in the third came via the long ball – Arlene Miller reached on a fielder's choice before Hannah Evans drilled a two-run shot to center to knot the game at 2-2.

The home run is Evans' second of the season.

Lily Richichi scored the squad's final run of the contest in the fifth. After leading off the frame with a single up the middle and being sacrificed to second, she came home as Miller reached first on an error at first base.

Miller and Taylor Smith joined Richichi and Evans with the Hornets hits.

Kayla Stephenson (2-3) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Smith (2 1/3) and Savannah Thorne (one inning) finished up in the circle.

PIEDMONT RECAP
The Lions scored two runs in the first along with single runs in the third through fifth innings and held SU to four hits in the 5-0 victory.

Tiffany Bower had two of the Hornets four hits with Evans and Stephenson adding one each. Bower had singles in the fourth and seventh, Evans a single in the fourth, and Stephenson a single in the fifth.
