WINCHESTER, Va. – Marymount University gained a split of its softball season series with Shenandoah University Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over the Hornets in eight innings.
Playing as the visitor in its home ballpark, Shenandoah (2-6) knotted the game at 1-1 thanks to a
Tiffany Bower home run in the sixth.
IN BRIEF
After the two teams were held off the board in the seventh, the Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the eighth as pinch hitter
Ryelee Brown plated placed runner
Lily Richichi with the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the frame, Marymount (2-6) answered back with two unearned runs on one hit and a pair of SU errors. The lone hit in the frame, a two-out double to right center, plated the game-winning run.
Bower and Richichi each had two hits for Shenandoah with Brown and pinch hitter
Savannah Thorne adding the others.
Taylor Smith (0-2), who pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, took the loss. She allowed the two unearned runs on one hit while striking out one.
Starting pitcher
Kayla Stephenson struck out four in six innings of work.
Bower's home run came on a 1-0 pitch and is her first of the season.
NOTE
Shenandoah played as the visiting team because Thursday's game was a makeup of a Feb. 23 postponed contest at Marymount.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah is tentatively scheduled to host Gettysburg on Saturday for a non-league doubleheader. A final decision on these games, based on the weather forecast, is scheduled to be made Friday morning.
