Softball Declaws Cougars

SU Sweeps Doubleheader, 5-2 and 3-2

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team won both games of its ODAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Rotary Field versus Averett.

The Hornets (10-18, 4-8 ODAC) carried the momentum from a 5-2 game one victory to their 3-2 win in game two against the Cougars (7-23, 2-10).

GAME ONE RECAP

A two-out rally in the fourth inning gave the Hornets the insurance runs they needed in the 5-2 triumph.

Tied at one and with two on, Kayla Stephenson hit a double to straight-away center bringing home Brenna Snyder and Eliza Hunt.

Shannon Keeney crossed the plate in the very next at-bat with Hannah Evans' RBI single, putting SU up 4-1.

After the Cougars cut the lead in half, Sarah Medellin got the Hornets another RBI single to put them up by three once again.

Stephenson (6-10) pitched the complete game for SU, allowing four hits and striking out three. Arlene Miller led the squad in hits with three.

GAME TWO RECAP

Leading 3-2 in the seventh with two runners in scoring position, Stephenson struck out a batter and forced a ground out to end the game and get the save to help SU sweep the Cougars.

Shenandoah went up 2-0 in the third as Danielle McNeill singled to left scoring Lily Richichi and advancing Miller to third. Miller stole home in the very next at-bat in a double-steal effort with McNeill.

McNeill went first to home on the game's eventual winning run on an RBI double to right-center from Taylor Smith in the sixth inning.

Winning pitcher Savannah Thorne (4-5) pitched five innings, striking out six in the process. Smith and Stephenson each pitched one inning in relief.

Miller, McNeill, and Throne went a combined 5 for 9 at the plate in game two, scoring two runs.
