WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its perfect weekend Sunday by sweeping at ODAC doubleheader from visiting Guilford.
Shenandoah (12-18, 6-8 ODAC) took out the Quakers (19-13, 9-5) with 6-3 and 5-2 victories.
GAME ONE RECAP
With the score tied at 3-3 heading into the sixth, the Hornets scored three runs on two hits, a walk, and a Guilford error to pull away and earn the 6-3 victory.
Rachael Blumenshine had the big blow in the frame with a two-run shot to left center to make it 6-3 in favor of the hosts. One batter prior to Blumenshine's home run,
Sarah Medellin put Shenandoah on top to stay with a double to left center to score
Paige Eagleton from second.
Eagleton reached on a one-out walk and stole second to get into scoring position.
Shenandoah had eight hits in the victory with Blumenshine getting two.
Kayla Stephenson (7-10) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks. She also struck out two.
GAME TWO RECAP
A three-spot again proved invaluable for the Hornets as SU scored three runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and earn the sweep with the 5-2 victory.
Coach
Courtney Allen's club scored the three runs on three hits and a hit batsmen. Pinch hitter Sydney Flores, up with the bases loaded, was plunked to bring in what proved to be the game-winning run. Medellin followed with an RBI single before Blumenshine had a sacrifice fly to center to score the third run of the frame.
A two-run first, keyed by a
Brenna Snyder two-run home run to right center, gave SU the early lead. Guilford tied it with one run in the second and another in the fifth.
In the sixth, the Quakers appeared to cut the deficit to two thanks to a solo home run, but the batter/runner was called out on appeal at home for missing the plate.
After GC led off the seventh with a single, Allen turned to Stephenson to close out the contest and the junior delivered, getting the final three outs to record her second save of the season.
Savannah Thorne (5-5) pitched the first 6.0 inningsand allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.
Tiffany Bower and
Arlene Miller both had two hits.

Shenandoah travels to nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
