BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team split its ODAC doubleheader at Bridgewater College Sunday with each team winning by a 4-3 score.
Shenandoah (6-12, 1-3 ODAC) was the one-run victor in game one with Bridgewater (14-10, 4-2) returning the favor in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
SU scored three runs in the first and added the game-winning in the seventh on a heads-up baserunning play to win, 4-3.
With one out and pinch runner
Kristen Blee on third base following a
Lily Richichi single to right center,
Arlene Miller lofted a foul pop fly in front of the third base dugout. BC third baseman Andrea Savage made the catch, but Blee realized that nobody was covering home plate and she scampered home with what proved to be the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the frame, winning pitcher
Kayla Stephenson sent the Eagles down in order to close out the contest. Stephenson (4-7) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. She struck out two.
Tiffany Bower,
Taylor Smith, and
Danielle McNeill all had RBI singles for Shenandoah in that three-run first.
The Hornets had nine hits in the win with Richichi finishing 2 for 3.
GAME TWO RECAP
Each team did its scoring in a single frame with Bridgewater scoring four runs in the third and Shenandoah nearly rallying by plating three runs in the seventh.
With two on and two out, Smith plated all of the runs for the Hornets with a triple to center to score
Hannah Evans and
Paige Eagleton. Evans had singled and pinch hitter
Sarah Medellin walked before Eagleton reentered as a pinch runner.
Smith also scored on the play as Bridgewater hit Smith with the relay throw as she rounded second base.
Kara Watkins singled to keep the rally going, but BC reliever Erica Nelson induced a game-ending groundout to close out the victory.
Savannah Thorne (2-3) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
