WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team swept Ferrum College Saturday morning in its final home conference doubleheader of the regular season.
The Hornets (14-20, 8-10 ODAC) won game one, 5-0, before taking a weather-shortened 8-3 game two victory over the Panthers (10-20, 2-12).
GAME ONE RECAP
Five runs in the second inning were all the Hornets needed in their game one shutout over the Panthers.
Paige Eagleton's single and stolen base put her in a prime scoring position as
Kayla Stephenson hit a single through the left side for the Hornets' first run of the day.
Later in the inning,
Arlene Miller reached safely at the first on a two-out infield single to load the bases.
Danielle McNeill then cleared the bases with a triple into the left field corner.
Catcher
Sarah Medellin drove in the final run of the inning and game with her RBI single through the middle.
Stephenson completed her ninth complete game of the season by sitting down the final three Ferrum batters in the seventh. The righty struck out four batters and allowed just one walk.
Miller and
Lily Richichi led the Hornets with two hits each.
GAME TWO RECAP
The second game of the doubleheader was called off in the middle of the sixth due to lightning coming through the Winchester area.
SU started the game off with a five-run first. After back-to-back walks to begin the first, Medellin rocketed a two RBI double to right center. She later scored on a throwing error by Ferrum's catcher.
A Richichi single up the middle brought home the final two runs of the opening inning.
Brenna Snyder got herself a RBI in the second on a double to right center before Rachael Blumenshine singled up the middle to make it 7-2 in favor fo the Hornets.
With two outs in the third, Miller forced a walk and stole second moments later. Now in scoring position, Miller was able to score on McNeill's RBI single to right center.
Pitcher
Taylor Smith entered the game in the third and picked up her first win of the season, striking out two and allowing just four hits in the process.

Shenandoah travels to Roanoke tomorrow at noon for its final ODAC doubleheader of the regular season.
