Women's Track & Field Wins Home Meet

Men Finish Fifth

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University track and field teams hosted the fifth annual Kaye & JJ Smith Invitational, with the women's team placing first in the meet which included 10 other teams.

Highlights of the event included Kiara Felston breaking multiple records and William Crowder taking home the men's 60-meter dash. Overall the Hornets won nine events throughout the day.

WOMEN'S RECAP

To start the day, Katya Hoover placed third in the high jump as she cleared a mark of 1.54m as first-year Taylor McIntyre also earned points for the Hornets with a jump of 1.34m.

Over in throws Felston broke a school and conference record in weight throws with a heave of 17.39m, beating the competition by over three meters to win the event. She'd end the meet by setting the school record for shot put with a toss of 11.93m on her fourth attempt.

Jessica Rendfrey, a junior, also placed in shot put with a mark of 10.07m, placing third. Teammate Katya Hoover was right behind her, placing fourth at 10.06m.

On the track, Shenandoah's 4x800 relay team won by nearly 25 seconds. The relay team consisted of Mackenzie Plowman, Madeline Lotts, Emma Nicely, and Kaitlyn Ruiz. The Hornets also took home third with the team of Amy Oleksy, Sarah Christy, Emma Madrigal, and Allie Clarkson.

Janelle Anderson won the 60m dash with a time of 8.04 seconds, moving her into second all-time for the program. Sarah Sidoro was a second behind her for second place in the race. Alexis Hubbard rounded out the top five with a time of 8.41.

Ruiz finished the 200m dash in second place, finishing at 28.24 seconds.

In the 3k race, Lotts once again won with a time of 10:42.45, three seconds faster than second place. Madrigal and Christy also earned points for SU by finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Rounding out the women's day on the track was the 4x400 relay team, consisting of Sidoro, Plowman, Hubbard, and Ruiz winning the race.

MEN'S RECAP

William Crowder won the first event on the track for the men, placing first in the 60m dash finals. Running in the first heat, Crowder was the only runner under the seven-second mark, crossing the finish line at 6.84 seconds.

Wyatt Newcome placed in the top-five for his performance in the 200m dash. Newcome crossed the line at 23.73 seconds.

Crowder along with Noah Eglin, Christopher Smalls, and Charles Vakos won the men's 4x400 relay race with a time of 3:35.45. The Hornets also had a team finish fourth in that same event.

At the high jump, Mekhi Mims tied for first in the event, hitting a height of 1.85m.

Reginald Patterson III finished seventh in the men's shot put and placed one spot higher earlier in the day in the weight throw.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah travels to Landover, Maryland next Saturday for the Cardinal Track & Field Classic hosted by Catholic.
