Football Routs Guilford on Homecoming

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team celebrated its 2024 Homecoming with a 42-10 conference win over Guilford College on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (5-2, 2-2 ODAC) offense rushed for four touchdowns while defense came away with three interception in the win over the Quakers (3-4, 0-4). Linebacker Matt Conroy had two interceptions on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter, including a 19-yard pick-six to put SU up 35-10 late in the contest.

RECAP

Homecoming started with a 15-yard reception by Guy Hayes which was closely followed by Broden Domenico breaking free for a 27-yard catch that put Shenandoah inside the redzone. Over the next three plays Guilford stopped the SU offense which led to a 4th-and-1 from the GC 10.

The offense stayed out on the field trying to convert the fourth down conversion. The gamble to go for it paid off as Jalen Redfearn ran up the left side of the line and directly into the endzone for the SU lead.

The Quakers, on their first drive, saw themselves too in a fourth-and-short situation in opponent territory. This time it was the defense stuffing the run game short of the line to gain as Ahvyon Boothe and Javonte Dixon came in to stop the play and give the ball back to the SU offense.

Shenandoah turned to Bryce Buchanan in the backfield for its next drive. The running back ran for 29 yards with a short completion mixed in as well on the drive. Buchanan took a long second down and turned it into a first down for SU, on a 10 yard gain that put the ball inches away from the endzone. SU turned right back to the sophomore to punch in the score and put the home team up by two touchdowns.

The Hornets held a 10:01 to 4:59 advantage on time of possession in the first, while keeping the Quakers to just six passing yards.

Guilford's defense stopped Shenandoah on the home team's first two drives of the second, first with a fumble and then with a punt. Luckily for SU the punt by Cody Crawford pinned the Quakers all the way back at their own five.

After little offense in the first, Guilford converted three plays of 10 or more yards on the drive, including two receptions of 29 and 21 yards. The chuck plays helped set the visitors up inside the SU 10 with less than a minute left to play in the half.

With first-and-goal from the three, Guilford tried running it but were stopped by Boothe and Sean Perry. Then, Corey Kidwell and Jamarcus Davis got in the backfield and stopped the Quakers for a loss of three. A false start then made it third-and-long for Guilford.

Guilford was unable to pickup the first and decided to kick the field goal with little time left in the half. The kick was tipped by a Hornet on the line but the ball was still able to go over the crossbar and get Guilford on the board. Shenandoah led 14-3 at the half.

The visitors got the ball first to start the second half but couldn't cut into the deficit as SU forced a punt.

Steven Hugney started the drive for SU with two completions, totaling 23 yards. Then the quarterback used his legs to rack up 25 more yards across three rushes. Short of the endzone, SU handed the ball to Aidan McCloskey for a three-yard touchdown. An interception returned for a touchdown cut SU's lead to 11 at the end of the third.

Hugney and the offense rebounded from the interception and tossed up a 19-yard touchdown pass in the back of the endzone to the hands of Michael Sheil with just under 13 minutes left in the game.

Looking to comeback, Guilford dropped back to pass and thought they had an open receiver but Matt Conroy jumped infront of the pass for his first of two interceptions on the day. However, Guilford got the ball right back on a pick of its own.

Six plays later, Guilford looked to go down the field again on a pass but Conroy was there for his second interception. The linebacker picked the ball off at the GC 19 yardline and returned it straight to the house for the 35-10 lead.

The very next Guilford drive, Conroy came up big again forcing a fumble inside Hornets' territory. Guilford kept its drive alive by picking up the loose ball that Conroy forced out. The drive didn't last long as Sean Perry cut off a pass in the endzone and intercepted Guilford.

Shenandoah went on a five minute drive capped off with Aidan Metzger scoring his first touchdown in over a year. The 19-yard score finished the day for the SU offense in the 42-10 win.

Shenandoah ran for 251 yards, which is the third time this season the rushing game has broke 200 yards.

Broden Domenico led receivers with seven catches for 73 yards.
