Volleyball Wraps Up ODAC Play in Loss at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University Volleyball team concluded its conference slate on Thursday night with a 3-1 loss at (RV) Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Hornets (12-14, 3-9 ODAC) won the first set, 25-19, but dropped the next two. Looking to tie the match at two, SU led the fourth 7-5, but the Marlins (24-4, 11-1) used a 10-2 run to help them close out the match.

RECAP

The Hornets started the night on the right note as Brooke Gast picked up a solo block for the first point of the evening. Vanessa Rodriguez then set Gast up for a kill that put SU up 5-1. The Marlins quickly tied the set but two errors set them back down by two.

Multiple times throughout the set the Hornets saw themselves hold a four-point lead, including 17-13, but the Marlins kept swimming back to pull close to SU. A solo block by Hannah Hylton helped SU finally pull further ahead late in the set, 23-17. Hylton gained a kill, giving SU the opportunity to end the set, which they did on the very next rally on a VWU error.

Sets two and three had the Marlins lead by double-digits in each frame. The host team took a 2-1 lead in the match on 25-11 and 25-14 wins in middle sets.

In the fourth, Virginia Wesleyan led 5-1 as the Hornets rallied back on a 6-0 run. Cheyenne Price, Ava Pannullo, and Regan Minney all had a kill during the run. Pannullo earned two more kills to keep the Hornets up by two at 8-6 and 9-7.

Virginia Wesleyan regained its lead but Price was there with a kill for WU to tie the frame at 12. However, SU would fail to gain the lead again as the Marlins earned an eight-point lead, their largest lead of the set, before winning the set 25-19.

Rodriguez and Kylie Danella had 17 and 14 assists, respectively, to lead the team with Hylton picking up a team-high 12 kills. Hylton sits six kills away from 200 on the season. Autumn Stroop had 24 digs and just needs 16 more to get her 400th of the season.

Shenandoah concludes its season at 11 a.m. on Saturday at home against Goucher College. The team will honor Cheyenne Price and Brooke Gast for their senior day festivities.
