Men's Basketball Gets Win on Senior Day

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team won an ODAC game, 73-67, on Saturday afternoon versus Averett University in senior day for SU.

After the Cougars (4-20, 2-13 ODAC) tied the game 25-25 with under two minutes left in the first, Jaylen Williams hit a jumper putting the Hornets (16-7, 7-7) up and they never looked back as they held the lead for the majority of the game.

RECAP

Following the senior day festivities, which honored Nic Pullum, Malik Jordan, Evan Makle, and Anthony Cowan, Pullum got the day started with a layup assisted by fellow senior Cowan. Both defenses played strong over the first seven minutes, with SU leading 9-2. Coming off the bench, Landon Russ hit the first three of the day to get his squad the seven-point lead.

Averett went on a 12-7 run to pull within two at 14-16. SU only led by three with four minutes left in the first but Marcus Nesmith nailed a triple to help SU extend the lead.

The Hornets led 38-37 and Nesmith went back to the three ball early in the second half. Each three SU hit, Averett responded with one of its own to keep the deficit at one. The visitors eventually took the lead, 51-48, but Makle didn't let it last long as he hit a three of his own to tie it.

The teams stayed in a close battle until a posterizing dunk from Pullum and another three from Makle put Shenandoah up by six with 46 ticks left on the clock. Four free throws by Williams sealed the win for SU.

Makle, Williams, and Pullum each scored at least 16 points and combined for 52 points. Pullum was one board shy of a double-double as he led the team in rebounds.
