FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse kicked off the 2024 season with an opening loss on the road to the University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets (0-1, 1-0 ODAC) were paced by
Logan Clingerman's hat trick and two goals from
Matt Daniel.
Tyler Held,
Josh Boonshaft, and
Sam Poster were the other Hornets who found the back of the net for Shenandoah.
Mark Isabelle got the start for the Hornets in the cage and made 21 saves in the season-opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets quickly jumped out to a lead in the first when
Tyler Held took
Stephen Graham's pass and beat the Eagle Keeper putting the Hornets up 1-0 35 seconds into the game.
Logan Clingerman putt the Hornets up 2-0 off another assist from Graham and Shenandoah was in business just over two minutes into the game. The Eagles went on a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the game with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter. With the clock showing just under two minutes to go in the first, Shenandoah found the equalizer from the stick of
Matt Daniel, and this game was knotted up at three apiece going into the second.
Clingerman got the scoring started for the Hornets in the second with a man-up goal off of the assist from Dillon Bakhash. The lead was short-lived as Mary Washington capitalized on their man-up opportunity and the game was tied at 4-4 heading into the break.
The Eagles regrouped after halftime and went on to use a 5-0 run in the third to take a 9-4 lead six minutes into the second half. The resilient fought their back into the game with back-to-back goals from
Sam Poster and
Matt Daniel's second of the game, which was a man-up goal.
Bryan Berryhill assisted on Poster's goal while
Josh Boonshaft assisted on the man-up opportunity. The Eagles scored one more in the third, but Boonshaft put one more in the back of the cage to cut it to a three-goal, 10-7 Eagles lead heading into the fourth.
Clingerman scored the lone goal for the Hornets in the fourth, but it was too little too late with Mary Washington scoring four in the fourth. Shenandoah ended up falling to the Eagles 13-8 in the season-opening game.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will make their home debut next week when Hood will travel to Shentel Stadium. The faceoff for that game will be at 7 pm.
