WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team opened their 2024 home campaign with an 11-10 win over Hood College Wednesday night and improved to 1-1 on the season. The Hornets were led by
Logan Clingerman who had a hattrick for Shenandoah.
Stephen Graham had two goals and two assists for the Hornets while picking up five groundballs.
Austin Galler had a goal and an assist while picking up seven groundballs and going an impressive 19-22 on faceoffs.
Mark Isabelle got the start once again for the Hornets and picked up the win making seven saves in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were able to win the opening draw but took a few minutes to settle into their offense.
Josh Boonshaft and
Logan Clingerman both fired shots at the Blazer goalie, but were not able to find the back of the net.
Dylan Foughty finally broke the scoreless tie at the 13:47 mark in the first quarter.
Austin Galler, who had a fantastic day on faceoffs, won the next faceoff as the Hornets settled into their offense. The Hornets fired five more shots on Hood but could not build on their lead. The Blazers scored back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game at 2-1 with just over 7 minutes to play.
Austin Sydnor,
Matt Daniel, and Clingerman all took shots but it was
Dylan Taylor coming through with the equalizer with 4:08 left in the opening period. It looked like the game would be deadlocked heading into the second, but the Blazers were able to capitalize and score a goal with only six seconds remaining, and Hood led 3-2 after the first.
Shenandoah tied the game once again when
Josh Boonshaft scored his first of the game off an assist from
Stephen Graham off the opening faceoff. Stephan Graham then got in the scoring action after the ensuing faceoff after Galler won the faceoff and shots from Daniel and Clingerman. As this was a back-and-forth game all game, Hood tied the game at 4 with just over 7 minutes to play in the half, and then regained the lead with just over two minutes to go. After Hood's goal,
Austin Galler took the faceoff, won the faceoff, and then went right down Broadway to score the game-tying goal. Galler was not done, as he then won the faceoff right after that, and went streaking down the middle of the field again, this time finding Clingerman who scored the go-ahead goal. However, once again, Hood was able to score a late goal to tie the game at 6 going into the half.
In the third, the Hornets were able to strike first scoring a man-up goal at 9:07 by
Matt Daniel. Once again, Hood tied the game with 2:38 to go in the quarter. Hood then regained the lead with 16 seconds to go, but the Hornets tied the game with 8 seconds remaining when
Logan Clingerman found the back of the net off the assist from
Stephen Graham.
In the fourth, the Hornets built their biggest lead of the game with three straight goals from Graham, Clingerman, and
Bryan Berryhill as Shenandoah led 11-8 with just over 8 minutes left to play. As the Hornets continued to pepper the Blazer goalie, looking for more insurance goals, it would be Hood to make a late push scoring a goal to pull back to within two with just under 2:30 to play in the game. After the ensuing faceoff, the Blazers would gain control again and pull within a goal with just over a minute to play. The Hornets neutralized the threat as they went on the man-up advantage and were able to kill the clock and avenge a 13-12 overtime loss to Hood last season in Frederick.
