Women's Lacrosse Dominates Avenging Angels in 2024 Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. - Behind six goals from Ainsley Buckner, the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team defeated Meredith College 19-4 in the first game of the season on Saturday afternoon.

After scoring nine goals in the first half, The Hornets (1-0) took a ten-goal lead in the fourth to get a running clock, lifting them to the victory over the Avenging Angels (0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Less than a minute into the season Amy Bell scored SU's first goal of 2024 on an assist from Sophia Albi. Two goals from Ainsley Buckner and goals from Gabriella Raspanti and Elizabeth Szell gave the Hornets a 5-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

The Avenging Angels scored first in the second to cut their deficit down to three but Buckner scored on a free position shot to pick up the hat trick and go back up by four. SU jumped out to an 8-2 lead after Taryn Junta and Emily Lerch scored. Before Meredith added a third goal right before the half, Buckner would pick up her fourth goal of the afternoon on an assist from Bell.

The third quarter was the quietest quarter of the game as the two teams only combined for three goals. For the Hornets, it was Madison Re scoring her first goal of the season at the 9:41 mark of the third and then Buckner added to her day with a fifth goal with under two minutes left in the quarter. SU led 11-4 after three quarters.

The final quarter was all SU as they scored three goals in the first 3:30 of the quarter. Alex Ripkin assisted on an Amy Bell goal and minutes later Ripkin scored to put SU up by ten, which started the running clock for the remainder of the game. Ripkin's goal was her first collegiate goal.

Re, Bell, Lerch, and Buckner added the final five goals of the afternoon for SU in the dominating win.

Shenandoah outshot Meredith 29-14 and had five more ground balls than the home team.
