WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team won their second-straight game after defeating Widener 13-12 in dramatic comeback fashion.
Logan Clingerman scored five goals and had an assist on 15 shots, 11 of which were fired toward the cage.
Josh Boonshaft also had a hattrick and assist in the game.
Austin Sydnor dished out three helpers, while
Austin Galler did a phenomenal job from the faceoff circle winning 22-27 attempts, picked up 11 ground balls, and scored a goal.
Mark Isabelle picked up the win for the Hornets and made 12 saves in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Widener quickly led 3-0 in the first with 8:42 to go in the quarter. Shenandoah started chipping away at the lead, first scoring a man-up goal by
Logan Clingerman off an assist from
Josh Boonshaft to cut the lead to 3-1. Clingerman wasted little time as just over two minutes later he scored another man-up goal and now it was a one-goal game with just over four minutes to play.
Josh Boonshaft tied the game at 3 in the first on the Hornets' third man-up goal of the period this time off an assist from
Luke Petrie. Shenandoah then took the lead off the Pride as momentum was starting to switch in favor of the home squad.
Logan Clingerman completed the first quarter hattrick and the fourth man-up goal of the period off an assist from
Austin Sydnor. Shenandoah could not hold on to the lead, as in the waning seconds of the quarter, the Pride were able to cash in on the equalizer.
Widener regained the lead in 5 minutes into the second period and proceeded to score two more unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead with just over two minutes to play.
Josh Boonshaft stopped the bleeding and found the back of the net with just 49 seconds remaining in the period, and the Hornets were trailing at the half 7-5.
Clingerman continued his fantastic day on the pitch finding the back of the net for the fourth time early in the third and the lead was cut to one at 7-6, again off an assist from Sydnor. However, the Pride answered back with two unanswered goals of their own to take a 9-6 lead with just under four minutes to go in the period. In the final 2:30 of the third, the Hornets and Pride traded goals, with Shenandoah's goal coming from
Dylan Foughty, but at the end of the period, SU was still down 10-7.
It only took 28 seconds for the comeback to start again, when
Josh Boonshaft scored for the Hornets. Once again, Widener answered back with a goal of their own, and it was still a three-goal deficit that Shenandoah needed to overcome. The Hornets did just that, and all in 19 seconds. First, Clingerman picked up another goal with the assist from Foughty. Then for the second game in a row,
Austin Galler won the face-off, took the ball right down the middle of the field, and scored. On the ensuing faceoff, Galler won again, went streaking down the field, and found
Stephen Graham with the equalizing goal. Shenandoah was not able to capitalize on the momentum, as Widener once again regained the lead with 9 minutes to play. The Hornet powerplay unit was outstanding, as Shenandoah scored another man-up goal to once again tie the game at 12, this time
Matt Daniel. Again, the ensuing faceoff was won by Galler and Graham would give the Hornets the lead for the first time since the first quarter. Widener made a late push and even went on the powerplay with under a minute to go, but the Hornet defense and
Mark Isabelle shut the Pride down to hang on for the 13-12 win.
UP NEXT:
The Hornets are back in action at home next Saturday when Susquehanna will come to town. Faceoff for that game will be at 1:30 pm.
