WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah men's lacrosse team fought back to overcome a 7-3 deficit to Susquehanna late in the third quarter, to tie the game at 9-9 with 51 seconds left in the fourth. Hornets won the opening draw in the overtime period but could not capitalize on the first possession. With Susquehanna now having possession of the ball, the River Hawks called timeout to set up their offense. After the timeout, Susquehanna took a shot, and initially, it looked like
Mark Isabelle made the save, but then the ball found the back of the net and Susquehanna escaped Winchester with a 10-9 overtime win.
Matt Daniel's five goals led the Hornets in the effort,
Dylan Foughty had the other four goals for the Hornets.
Logan Clingerman dished out two helpers and
Austin Sydnor had the other lone assist. Once again,
Mark Isabelle got the start in goal and made 16 saves in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dylan Foughty got the scoring going for the Hornets in the first scoring just over two minutes into the game. Susquehanna looked for the equalizer, but Isabelle came up with the save.
Matt Daniel put the Hornets up 2-0 with 11 minutes go in the quarter. The River Hawks threatened a few more times in the first, but the Hornets kept them off the scoreboard through the first half of the quarter, Susquehanna finally broke through to cut the lead in half with 7:48 to go in the quarter. The Hornets fired three more shots on the River Hawks goalie but did not score the rest of the way and the Hornets took a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Shenandoah was not able to get anything going in the second, as they only had three shots in the period, two from
Matt Daniel and the other coming from
Sam Poster. The River Hawks, however, scored three goals in the period and took a 4-2 lead heading into the break.
Susquehanna scored on the opening possession in the third to increase their lead to 5-2, but
Dylan Foughty scored his second of the game to cut the lead back to 5-3. Just as it looked like the Hornets were gaining momentum, the River Hawks scored two more goals for their biggest lead of the game at 7-3. The comeback started late in the third when
Matt Daniel found the back of the net with one second to go in the quarter.
Dylan Foughty scored back-to-back-to-back goals to start the fourth to tie the game at 7 apiece with under 10 minutes to play in regulation. Once again, as the Hornets were building momentum, the River Hawks scored back-to-back goals themselves 50 seconds apart to regain a 9-7 lead.
Matt Daniel scored the final two goals for the Hornets with the eighth goal coming at the 3:17 mark off an assist from
Logan Clingerman and then went and scored the game-tying goal with 51 seconds left, this time off an assist from
Austin Sydnor.
In the overtime period, the Hornets won the opening face but could not score on that possession. With the River Hawks going the other way, they did find the back of the net for the game winner in overtime, 10-9.

The Hornets continue their homestand on Wednesday with another nonconference game. Shenandoah will welcome Alleghany to town for an afternoon game with the opening faceoff scheduled for 4 pm.
