Softball Sweeps Juniata in Season Debut

WINCHESTER, Va. - With a pair of 7-2 wins, the Shenandoah University softball team swept Juniata College at home on Saturday in the first doubleheader of 2024 for SU. The Hornets (2-0) rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit in game one, while in game two they scored the first seven runs in the win over the Eagles (0-2).

GAME ONE

Pitching Results
Winning Pitcher: Kayla Stephenson (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Maryn Swank (0-1)

Top Performers
Tiffany Bower: 3-3, two RBI, two doubles
Sarah Medellin: 2-3, one RBI, one run scored
Kayla Stephenson: 7.0 IP, four defensive assists

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Juniata singled up the middle to start the game and later drove in its only two runs on two separate singles to take a 2-0 lead. Kayla Stephenson helped her squad get out a bases-loaded situation with an out at the plate and a strikeout to end the side.
  • Danielle McNeill started for season 1-1 with a bunt single and was driven in to score SU's first run of the season on a Tiffany Bower RBI double, one batter later. SU trailed 2-1 after one complete inning of play.
  • Following a three up, three down top of the third, Bower delivered in the bottom half with an RBI single, scoring Rachael Blumenschine and tying the game 2-2. Stephenson got the next three Eagles' batters out in the fourth and Sarah Medellin drove in the eventual game-winning run and would score in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2 in favor of Shenandoah.
  • Two defensive mistakes helped the Hornets score their final three runs in the home half of the fifth, taking the 7-2 lead.
  • Stephenson allowed just one hit during the final six outs to close out her complete game.

GAME TWO

Pitching Results
Winning Pitcher: Savannah Thorne (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Rylea Lynch (0-1)

Top Performers
Makayla Cox - 2-4, two runs scored
Sarah Medellin - Three RBI, one double
Savannah Thorne - 5.1 IP, seven strikeouts
Taylor Smith - 1.2 IP, three strikeouts, zero walks allowed

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shenandoah scored early and often in game two. Juniata stranded two in scoring position in the top of the first and when Shenandoah came to bat Danielle McNeill and Makayla Cox both singled before advancing on a walk to load the bases. Sarah Medellin lined a ball to deep center for a double, clearing the bases and putting SU up 3-0 in the first.
  • Rachael Blumenschine and Allison McQueeney singled to lead off the bottom of the second, a throwing error sent Blumenschine to third. McNeill landed a sacrifice bunt which scored Blumenschine. Tiffany Bower smacked a double to left center, helping McQueeney score. Shenandoah already up 5-0, added two more runs in the inning to go up by seven.
  • Across the next three innings, Savannah Thorne helped SU out by striking out three batters and holding Juniata to just two hits.
  • In the top of the sixth Juniata ended Shenandoah's scoring run with two solo home runs. The Eagles scoring threat ended there as Taylor Smith came in for the final five outs and recorded three strikeouts.
