Softball Rebounds in Game Two, Splits With Mary Baldwin

WINCHESTER, Va. - After losing 6-4 in game one, the Shenandoah University softball team won 8-1 in game two to split with Mary Baldwin University in a non-conference doubleheader of Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Hornets (7-3) jumped head 4-1 in game one but a grand slam in the top half of the seventh inning helped the visiting Fight Squirrels (3-5) win the first game. It'd be the home team taking game two as SU scored a combined five runs in the middle frames after going ahead 3-0 at the end of one in the win over MBU.

GAME ONE RECAP

Pitching Results
Winning pitcher - Regan Fraizer (1-1)
Losing pitcher - Taylor Smith (2-3)

Kayla Stephenson - 6.0 IP, 2 SO, 1 ER
Tiffany Bower - 2-4, 1 RBI
Sarah Medellin - 2-3

How It Happened
  • Mary Baldwin struck first in the away half of the first. MBU picked up a lead of walk, then advanced the runner to second on a flyout to Allison McQueeney in right field. One batter later the Fighting Squirrels got a single up the middle to bring in the opening run.
  • After giving up two hits in the second inning, Kayla Stephenson held the visitors to no more than one hit in the next four innings. The pitcher only allowed six hits in her 6.0-inning performance.
  • Shenandoah would finally find the plate in the bottom of the sixth. McQueeney reached base on a single through the left side to start the inning, Danielle McNeill then advanced the right fielder to second on a sac bunt.
  • Tiffany Bower came to the plate and singled home McQueeney, tying the game 1-1. Makayla Cox drew a walk in the next at-bat and SU put pinch runners Lexie Reid and Eliza Hunt on first and second, respectively. The bases were loaded when Sarah Medellin picked up an infield single, one batter later. Brenna Snyder came in to run for Medellin, in the first appearance of the season for Snyder.
  • With two outs in the inning and a tied game, Hannah Evans stepped up to the plate and successfully reached base on a strike-three wild pitch which would score Reid who was at third. Kara Watkins batted next and hit into a fielder's choice but the throw to second bases resulted in an error, which plated two more Hornets. SU led 4-1 at the end of six.
  • In the top of the seventh Mary Baldwin's first three batters reached base on a single, double, and a walk, which loaded the bags. One swing later and Mary Baldwin took a 5-4 lead on a grand slam. The visitors added one more run in the inning, helping them secure the 6-4 win.

GAME TWO RECAP

Winning pitcher - Savannah Thorne (4-0)
Losing pitcher - Molly Thompson (2-2)

Top Performers

How It Happened
  • Following Savannah Thorne retiring the Fighting Squirrels in order to begin the game, Allison McQueeney led off the bottom of the first with a single. Two batters later McQueeny was standing at third. Hannah Evans picked up her first hit of the season to bring in McQueeney, putting SU up 1-0.
  • With two outs in the inning, Mary Baldwin committed a costly error in right field which scored Evans and Thorne to put SU up 3-0 at the end of one.
  • Thorne allowed no hits through the next two innings which put SU in a position to take a bigger lead. In the third SU did just that as Evans once again hit a double to drive in a run, and Danielle McNeill would be the one to score after being hit in the hand by a pitch to start the inning.
  • Mary Baldwin responded with a run in the fourth but McNeill helped the Hornets gain a 5-1 lead with a double which scored Brenna Westwood. The Hornets held a 7-1 lead at the end of six as Taylor Smith and Westwood hit back-to-back extra-base hits to take the large lead.
  • Pinch hitter Kara Watkins scored Westwood later in the sixth with a single up the middle with two outs in the inning.
  • First-year Abigail Campbell made her first appearance for SU in the top of the seventh and made a spectacular grab in the circle for the game's final out.
