Bower's Home Run Lifts Softball to Split at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. - A three-run home run by Tiffany Bower lifted the Shenandoah University softball team to a split on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Marymount University.

The Hornets (8-4) led in game one 4-0 but the Saints (7-10-1) overcame the early deficit to win the first half of the doubleheader, 8-6. SU got revenge in the latter half of the doubleheader when Bower came to the plate in the third inning and drove in the only three runs of the game, helping Shenandoah get the 3-0 shutout victory.

Losing pitcher - Savannah Thorne (4-1)

Sarah Medellin - 1-2, 2 runs, 2 walks, 1 RBI
Tiffany Bower - 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 double

How It Happened
  • Allison McQueeney led the game off with a single in the top of the first and advanced to scoring position on a sac bunt. Sarah Medellin singled to bring McQueeney home while Medellin advanced to third on an error from right field. In the next at-bat, Tiffany Bower hit the Hornets' first extra-base hit of the game to make it 2-0. Savannah Thorne retired the Saints in order in the bottom of the first, striking out the first two batters.
  • Thorne got on base to start the away half of the second inning and traveled home on a Brenna Westwood RBI double, making it 3-0 SU early. Danielle McNeill stepped up to the plate later in the inning and made it 4-0 in favor of SU on a single to left field.
  • With Shenandoah ahead in the driver's seat, Marymount stepped on the gas and evened the game at 4-4 in the home half of the second. The game was tied on a two-out, three-run home run from the home team.
  • Shenandoah regained the lead in the fourth inning as seven SU batters came to the plate and Bower hit a RBI single with the bases loaded, making it 5-4. Taylor Smith grounded out to third but plated Medellin in the process, extending SU's lead.
  • The lead didn't hold as Marymount scored one run early in the fourth and then loaded the bases in the same inning. The Saints hit a bases-clearing three RBI double to take a 8-6 lead, which would stay the same for the remainder of the game. Shenandoah was held hitless for the final three frames.

Winning pitcher - Kayla Stephenson (2-0)
Losing pitcher - Kaylee Atkins (0-1)

Tiffany Bower - 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI

The next two batters for SU went down swinging but this sent Tiffany Bower to the plate. Bower sent a ball deep to outfield which left the park and opened up the game. Bower's bomb made it a 3-0 game in favor of SU.
  • The next 4.5 innings of play was a pitching duel as neither offense was able to get back on the board.
  • Stephenson and the Hornets' defense left seven Marymount runners on base and kept the home score column spotless.
