Softball Swept By Denison

WINCHESTER, Va. - In a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon the Shenandoah University softball team was swept by Denison College at home.

The Big Red (4-4) hit three home runs in the 9-0 (6 innings) win in game one and forced the Hornets (8-6) to hit into a double play in the ninth inning of game two, to help them lock up a 5-4 win.

How it Happened
  • Two doubles in the top half of the first help Denison take a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Danielle McNeill hit an opposite-field triple but was unable to score as the Hornets struck out to end the inning.
  • In the second, a lead-off double and a home run to right center field propelled the Big Red into a 3-0 lead. They added a solo home run in the third to take a four-run lead.
  • Taylor Smith came into the game to pitch for SU in the second and allowed just one hit through her first 10 batters.
  • Another extra-base hit, followed by a single to center field put Denison up by five after five innings of play. The visitors picked up three straight singles to begin the sixth and added to their lead on the third single. With runners on first and second, Denison hit its third home run of the game to lead 9-0. They forced a fly out and two ground outs to end the bottom half of the inning and take the win.

How It Happened
  • The first two batters of the game for Shenandoah reached base on two errors by Denison and Danielle McNeill followed those errors with a single to left field to drive in the Hornets' opening run. In the second inning, Breena Snyder hit a solo home run to straightaway center to open up the Hornets lead, 2-0. A sac fly in the fourth helped Denison cut into the Hornets lead.
  • Shenandoah received a sac fly of its own as Sarah Medellin flew out to right field and McNeill was able to score, making it 3-1 in favor of SU.
  • A two-out single and double tied the game, 3-3, in the top half of the sixth for Denison. Denison went down in order in the seventh and the Hornets got a hit in that same inning but couldn't score as the teams went to extras.
  • In the top of the eighth, Denison struck first as they scored on a groundout. In the bottom half of the inning Taylor Smith laid down a sac but to advance Savannah Thorne to third. One batter later Paige Eagleton singled to center to score Thorne and tie the game.
  • With Big Red adding a run in the ninth, the Hornets had to score a run to keep the game alive. Shenandoah put two on base but hit into a double play to go down to its final out. SU fouled out on the final at-bat to end the game and leave a runner at third.

UP NEXT

The Hornets open up conference play next Saturday at Averett.
