Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Haverford (RV) in Non-Conference Dual

WINCHESTER, Va. - After a late Haverford College goal, the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team won the draw control and held on to the ball to secure a 10-9 home win on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

The Hornets (4-1) led 10-8 with under a minute remaining in the game but the Fords (3-3) scored a man-up goal to bring it within one. Emily Lerch got the ensuing draw control to give SU possession and Shenandoah drew two penalties to go a man-up and get the win.

TOP PERFORMERS

Ainsley Buckner - 3 goals, 4 draw controls, 2-3 free-position shots
Sofia Albi - 2 goals
Alex Ripkin - 2 goals
Madison Perry - 9 saves, win

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A minute in Alex Ripkin put Shenandoah up by one with her first goal of the afternoon. Gabriella Raspanti made it 2-0 game minutes later as first-year Sofia Albi tallied her first career goal to make it 3-0 in favor of Shenandoah.
  • Heading into the second quarter the visitors made it a one goal game. Elizabeth Zsells scored for Shenandoah first in the second frame and Ainsley Buckner capped off the quarter for SU with a tally following a turnover by Haverford.
  • Down a player and trying to kill the penalty, Buckner and SU were awarded a free-position shot and capitalized on it to make it a three goal game. After scoring her first career goal earlier in the game, Albi found the net again on a free-position shot, this time with a man-up. Shenandoah made it a hat trick of free-position goals in the third as Emily Ransom made it an 8-5 game. Haverford scored two more goals in the third but sandwiched between that was an Alex Ripkin SU goal. SU led 9-7 at the end of three.
  • The Fords scored a minute into the fourth to cut their deficit down to one. The score remained that way for half the quarter before Buckner completed her hat trick with another SU free-position goal. 0:47 was left on the clock and the Hornets went down a player on a penalty and Haverford made use of the penalty to score a quick goal, making it 10-9 in favor of SU. The penalty remained on the board but SU won the draw control and wasted time off the clock to lock up the win.
