Softball Swept By Guilford in First ODAC Doubleheader of the Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by Guilford College on Sunday afternoon in the first ODAC games of the 2024 season.

The Hornets (8-8, 0-2 ODAC) led after the top half of the first in each game but the Quakers (10-8, 2-0) took the lead in the second inning of an 11-6 win in game one and held the lead after the opening inning of a game two, 8-7, win.

How It Happened
  • Allison McQueeny led the game off with a single up the middle and was advanced to second, one batter later, as Kara Watkins was hit by a pitch. Danielle McNeill put the two SU runners in scoring position on a sac bunt. An error scored McQueeney to put Shenandoah up 1-0.
  • With the bases loaded in the first inning, Paige Eagleton hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Tiffany Bower and put SU up by three. Guilford cut into the Hornets' lead with four consecutive singles in the bottom half of the inning. SU led 3-2 after one.
  • A walk and a double by the Quakers put two in scoring position for them in the second and a groundout and a single helped them take a 4-3 lead. Kelsey Freeman came into the game to pitch for SU and retired the Quakers in order in the third to keep the score right where it was.
  • Rachael Blumenschine doubled to left field to begin the fourth and one Quaker error later, SU had a runner standing on second and third. Bower singled to right center and helped SU take the lead, 5-4. Guilford regained the lead 9-5 in the bottom of the inning.
  • Shenandoah entered the seventh inning down 11-5. Makayla Boone singled with one out to put a runner on for SU. Makayla Cox was hit by a pitch to get two runners on with still one out in the inning. Boone scored the final SU run on a throwing error by Guilford but a groundout would end the game as GC took the win.

How It Happened
  • Allison McQueeny also led this game off with a single and scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tiffany Bower, putting SU up 1-0. The lead would be SU's only lead of the game
  • Guilford scored five runs in its first three innings to hold a 5-1 lead after three. In the fourth Hannah Evans hit a home run to left center field to cut into the deficit. Brenna Westwood doubled to lead off the fifth and would score on a Sarah Medellin double down the left field line, making it a 7-3 game in the fifth.
  • Down 8-3, Rachael Blumenschine drove in a run in the sixth inning on a double. Two batters later, Westwood hit the team's second home run of the afternoon, scoring Blumenschine and making it a two-run ball game.
  • In the seventh inning, Evans went yard again with a bomb to left field. SU trailed 8-7 and Pagie Eagleton got the tying run on base with a single. With two outs in the inning, Blumenschine picked up a single but the lead runner on the bases was thrown out at third on the play to end the game and help Guilford sweep the Hornets.
