WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah Hornets got back to their winning ways by picking up a nonconference lacrosse matchup with the Allegheny College Gators 10-3. The Hornets improved to 3-2 on the season while they held the Gators (1-2) scoreless for the final 41 minutes. The Hornets picked up a hattrick from
Matt Daniel and got two-goal performances from both
Dylan Taylor and
Sam Poster, Poster also picked up an assist.
Mark Isabelle got the start in goal once again, and picked up his third win of the year, while making 15 saves and only allowing three goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jet Hayes got the scoring going for the Hornets picking up his first goal since May of 2021. The Gators fired a shot that
Mark Isabelle made the save, and on the ensuing clear
Dylan Foughty fired a shot just wide, but the Hornets were able to keep possession. With the Hornets setting up their offense, Hayes lost his defender and buried the ball in the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later,
Dylan Taylor picked up his sixth goal of the year as the Hornets pushed the lead to 2-0. The Gators finally got on the board with 8:45 left in the quarter, to cut the lead in half, but the Hornet offense scored again pushing the lead back to two. The Hornets third goal came from
Matt Daniel off an assist from
Dylan Foughty. Allegheny picked up one more goal before the quarter ended, and Shenandoah took a 3-2 lead into the second.
The Gators picked up the tying goal early in the second, but that would be the last time they found the back of the cage in the contest.
Logan Clingerman picked up the game-winning goal for the Hornets with his goal at 10:15 left in the half. From that point on it was all Hornets.
Sam Poster scored his first of the game to increase the lead to 5-3 before
Dylan Taylor scored just 57 seconds later. Just over 30 seconds later it was Poster finding the back of the cage for his second of the game as the lead ballooned to 7-3. Even though the Hornets fired shots from
Austin Sydnor,
Logan Clingerman, and
Bryan Berryhill, they could not capitalize and took a 7-3 lead into the break.
Austin Sydnor finally broke through and found the back of the cage early in the third with 13:21 left to go in the quarter. The Hornets took advantage of the man-up opportunity they had with
Matt Daniel's second of the game. The Hornets continued to pepper the Gator goalkeeper, as they fired five more shots, but were not able to score and Shenandoah took a comfortable 9-3 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth, the lone goal came from
Matt Daniel as he completed the hattrick for his second consecutive hattrick. Shenandoah took seven more shots after scoring the 10
th goal of the game but were not successful in adding to their lead. Shenandoah dominated the faceoff circle winning 12 out of the 16 attempts. Besides the defense stepping up to not allow a goal for over 40 minutes, the Hornets did a fantastic job killing off any extra man opportunities, especially in the third. Shenandoah picked up a 2-minute major, and before that penalty expired picked up another minute penalty. With the Hornets down two men, it was no problem as Isabelle made a save, the Hornets successfully cleared the ball and killed the remaining time of both penalties.
