Women's Lacrosse Upsets No. 14 CNU Behind Three Fourth Quarter Goals

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team picked up its second straight win against a nationally-ranked team with an 8-6 non-conference home win versus No. 14 Christopher Newport University.

The Hornets (3-0) and the Captains (3-1) entered the final quarter tied at five but Madison Re, Kate Vendemia, and Gabriella Raspanti all found the back of the net in the final 15 minutes to give SU the upset victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Ainsley Buckner took control early scoring first for the Hornets just over 90 seconds into the game. CNU tied the game minutes later and the two teams stayed even for majority of the quarter. The Hornets regained control with a big scoring outburst in the final three minutes. Elizabeth Szell scored with 2:40 left to put SU up 2-1 and Buckner added on with a goal under a minute later. Alex Ripkin scored a last-second goal to put SU up by three after one.

Emily Onorato found Madison Re for Shenandoah's fourth straight goal, 29 seconds into the second. CNU rallied back to cut its deficit down to two heading into the half. Shenandoah outshot the Captains in the first half and had fewer turnovers heading into the break.

The Captains struck first in the third quarter and added one more to even the game at 5-5 with under eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Re scored her second of the game on a man-up goal just 44 seconds into the final quarter. Ripken picked up the assist on the goal. Minutes later Kate Vendemia put SU up by two. After CNU brought the game back within one, Gabriella Raspanti put the game away with under six minutes left with her fifth goal of the season.

Madison Perry made four saves in the final quarter to help SU hold onto the win.

Shenandoah heads to Dickinson on Wednesday for a non-conference game.
