Dickinson Holds Off Women's Lacrosse

CARLISLE, Pa. - In a non-conference game on Wednesday night the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the season in a 12-10 final at Dickinson College.

After the Hornets (3-1) rallied back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game in the second quarter, the Red Devils (3-2) scored four straight goals and held off another SU comeback attempt in the final quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got possession first in the game and Ainsley Buckner ripped the games first shot that was saved by Dickinson. On the DC clear attempt, the Red Devils turned over the ball and in the process the Hornets went a man-up. On the man-up opportunity, Buckner got the ball back and made the most of it, scoring the game's opening tally.

Dickinson took advantage of two Shenandoah turnovers and gained a 2-1 lead just minutes later. Following their second goal, the Red Devils added another goal 85 seconds later, leading 3-1 six minutes into the contest. Buckner scored another man-up goal for SU, this time on a free position shot, making it 3-2. Before the first quarter ended the hosts had added two more goals to their evening.

Neither team had success finding the back of the net for nearly nine minutes in the second quarter but Alex Ripkin broke that trend to start SU's comeback. Less than 20 seconds after Ripkin's man-up tally, Gabriella Raspanti found Amy Bell for a Hornets goal, bringing their deficit down to one.

With 3:16 left in the second quarter, Raspanti scooped up a ground ball, following a Bell shot, and decided to keep the ball this time and score the game-tying goal. The goal capped off a three-minute span which saw the Hornets tie the game 5-5. In the final minutes of the second, Dickinson regained the lead and took the 6-5 advantage into the break.

The Red Devils scored the first three goals of the third quarter but the Hornets got assistance from Bell, Buckner, and Madison Re in the final third of the frame to bring them within one goal. Emily Lerch picked up helpers on the Bell and Buckner goals. However, despite the Hornets' surge, the Red Devils scored one more goal to lead by two entering the final quarter.

Trailing 11-8 with under nine minutes left in the game, Victoria Wunderlich forced a Dickinson turnover which transitioned into a scoring opportunity for Shenandoah as Re found the net once again and brought the Hornets back within two. The Red Devils regained a three-goal lead but Emily Ransom was there minutes later for SU to bring the game back to a two-score outing.

Dickinson ended the game by winning the draw control following Ransom's goal and holding Shenandoah without another offensive chance.

Despite the loss, SU goal Madison Perry made nine saves in the game which was most for either team in the game. Shenandoah had six players with a multi-point evening, with Buckner leading the bunch with four points (3G, 1A). Julianna Fohner had a game-high five ground balls, while Re led the game with three caused turnovers.
