Perry's Last Second Save Helps Hornets Defeat Eagles

WINCHESTER, Va. - With a last-second save the No. 24 Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team held on for a 10-9 non-conference win against the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon at home.

The Hornets (6-1) trailed 8-7 in the middle of the fourth quarter but quickly rallied back with three straight goals to take a 10-8 lead. The Eagles (2-5) brought the game back to within one and had a chance to tie the contest in the waning seconds but were held off by goalie Madison Perry, who clipped the Eagles chance at tying the game.

TOP PERFORMERS

Madison Perry - 7 saves
Alex Ripkin - 3 goals
Gabriella Raspanti - 2 goals
Ainsley Buckner - 1 goal, 4 draw controls, 1 ground ball

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was all Hornets early on as Alex Ripkin found the back of the cage first and put SU up 1-0, less than a minute into the game. In the middle of the frame Madison Re added to the Hornets' early success with a goal, putting them up by two. Ripkin wasn't done scoring yet as she tallied a man-up goal just nine seconds into the second quarter as the possession clock was set to expire following a penalty by UMW in the final moments of the first.
  • Mary Washington didn't let the Hornets three-goal lead stand for long as they ripped three consecutive goals during the next five minutes to put us at a 3-3 ballgame. Ainsley Buckner helped the Hornets regain the lead with a goal two minutes later.
  • With two minutes left in the half, the Eagles gained a free-possession shot that was saved by Madison Perry, with Emily Ransom scooping up the loose ball. Ransom raced across the field and fed the ball to Re, who then found a wide-open Gabriella Raspanti, with Raspanti burying the ball past the Eagles keeper and putting SU up by two. Emily Lerch capitalized on the SU momentum and scored right before the halftime whistle to give her team a 6-3 lead at the break.
  • The Eagles scored the first two goals of the second half, making it 6-5. Sofia Albi didn't let them get any closer for the moment as she tallied her sixth goal of the season, putting SU back up by two.
  • Mary Washington once again didn't stay down and rattled off another three straight goals to gain its first lead of the game, 8-7, with 10:59 left in the game. Minutes later, Albi got her second point of the game as she found an open Raspanti for the easy goal to even the game, 8-8.
  • Ripkin followed Raspanti's goal with a shot that bounced off the turf and hit the top of the cage to give SU the lead once again. Buckner won the ensuing draw control for SU and gave them a chance to add to the lead. Amy Bell received the ball and worked her way to the center of the field and fired off a shot that also jumped off the turf, this time finding the top left corner of the net to put SU up 10-8 with just over six minutes left.
  • Mary Washington cut its deficit in half but found themselves down two players with under a minute to go. However, the Eagles were able to force an SU turnover with 20 seconds left and quickly rushed down the field. UMW gained a wide-open chance at the front of the goal but was robbed by Madison Perry. Perry dished the ball to Julianna Fohner to kill the rest of the clock and secure the SU win.
