No 17 Roanoke Clips No 24 Hornets Wings in Lacrosse Battle

SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team hit the road after picking up three straight wins at home over the past week and a half, for a matchup with number 17 Roanoke College Maroons.  Even though the Hornets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, the Maroons got the better of Shenandoah with a 13-8 win.  The Hornets (6-2, 1-1) were led by Madison Re with three goals and an assist, followed by Emily Lerch and Ainsley Buckner who each had two goals, with Lerch adding two helpers.  Madison Perry got the start for the Hornets and made 13 saves in the contest.  Roanoke out shot the Hornets 32-29, but the Hornets had the edge in ground balls with a 19-16 advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hornets won the opening draw control but could not capitalize on Alex Ripkin's shot as she fired one just high over the net.
  • Roanoke forced a turnover on the next possession, but Julianna Fohner caused a turnover herself which led to Madison Re firing a shot saved by the Maroon goaltender.
  • Emily Lerch got the Hornets on the board first with a goal at the 10:44 mark in the first, her seventh of the season.
  • Maddison Perry made another save off the Maroon attack to keep the Hornets in front on the next possession.
  • With 6:46 left in the first, Ainsley Buckner scored her 20th of the season off an assist from Emily Lerch to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
  • Off the ensuing draw control, Roanoke got on the board with their first goal of the game to cut the lead in half.
  • Just over two minutes later, at the 4:06 mark, Roanoke tied the game at 2.  Madison Re had a free-position attempt that Roanoke saved to keep it a one-goal game right before the game was tied.
  • With Roanoke gaining momentum, they scored two straight goals to take a 4-2 lead with just over a minute to play.
  • Emily Lerch took the draw control for the Hornets and went right down the field to bury her second goal of the game with 59 seconds remaining in the quarter.
  • Madison Perry made three saves in the second quarter, but the Maroons did score three times in the quarter to take a 7-3 lead heading into the break.
  • In the second, the Hornets got shots from Ainsley Buckner, Alex Ripkin, Sofia Albi, and Gabriella Raspanti but could not find the back of the net.
  • Roanoke held the Hornets scoreless for nearly 26 minutes, but Madison Re broke the drought with a goal off an assist from Emily Lerch to cut the lead in half, 8-4 with 4:11 to go in the third.
  • With 10 seconds to go in the third, the Hornets finally took advantage of the man advantage as Madison Re scored her second of the game off an assist from Amy Bell.  The Hornets won the ensuing draw control, but once again the Hornets got a shot off, right after the horn sounded to end the third.  Roanoke took an 8-5 lead heading to the final quarter.
  • The Maroons scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to eliminate the two goals the Hornets scored at the end of the third, but the defense caused a turnover, and after a ground ball from Julianna Fohner, led to a breakaway from Buckner who buried the goal to cut it back to a 10-6 deficit.
  • The Maroons killed another penalty and as that penalty expired, scored to make it an 11-6 game with 5:42 left to go in the fourth.  Off the ensuing draw control, won by Talia Maria, Madison Re buried her third of the game to keep the Hornets' hopes alive with just over 5 minutes to play.
  • After an alternate possession, which gave the Hornets the ball back, Fohner drew a green card to put the Hornets up on advantage again.  Ainsley Buckner was cutting through the lane and lost control of the ball, but Gabriella Raspanti was there to clean up the possession and make it an 11-8 game with just over 3:23 left to play.
  • The Hornets picked up a green card with just under two minutes to go, and the Maroons capitalized on the power play making it a four-goal deficit.  Shenandoah won the draw control, but the Maroons caused a turnover and scored on the breakaway to push it back to a 13-8 lead.
  • The Hornets pressed, but the Maroons won the draw control and ran out the clock to hold on for the 13-8 victory.
