WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon in an ODAC doubleheader at home. The Hornets (8-10, 0-4 ODAC) lost game one 4-1, then tied game two, 2-2, but fell in extra innings against the Eagles (9-11, 2-0).

Losing Pitcher - Kayla Stephenson (2-2)
Save - Erica Nelson (3)

Top Performers
Brenna Westwood - 2-3, 1 BB
Rachael Blumenschine - 1-2, 1 run
Allison McQueeney - 1-4, 1 RBI

How It Happened
  • It took till the third inning for the first team to score as Bridgwater took a 1-0 lead on a groundout to third. The Eagles kept the Hornets' offense quiet for the early portion of the game as they retired nine of the first 10 SU hitters, with the only SU base runner reaching on a walk in the first.
  • In the fourth inning, the visitors added a pair of runs to extend its lead, 3-0. Bridgewater scored on a single and an error.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth, SU finally put hits up on the board. Brenna Westwood, Danielle McNeill, and Tiffany Bower stranded together three straight hits to load the bases with no outs. With the go-ahead run standing at the plate, Bridgewater got the next three batters out on a pair of strikeouts and a popup to short, leaving the bases full. Bridgewater made Shenandoah pay for it by adding another run in the fifth on a solo home run with two outs.
  • With an out in the bottom of the seventh Rachael Blumenschine doubled down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position for SU. Allison McQueeney brought Blumenschine home on a single up the middle, McQueeney then advanced to third on a double from Westwood. This put the tying run at the plate with just one out but the Eagles secured the victory by forcing a line out and a groundout to end the first leg of the doubleheader.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater opened the game with two runs in the top half of the first on three singles and a double. Shenandoah responded in the bottom half of the inning as Allison McQueeney singled to left field to lead off the inning. Brenna Westwood advanced McQueeney to second on a sac bunt. With two outs in the inning, Tiffany Bower got down a single to score McQueeney for the first of two times in the game. SU trailed 1-0 after one.
  • Savannah Thorne sat down the next six Bridgewater batters to help SU stay close in the game. In the third inning, SU tied the game, 2-2, the same way that they scored in the first. McQueeney singled to kickoff the inning and was advanced on a sac bunt. Bower then hit another single to left field to once again score McQueeney. Thorne helped the Hornets get to extra innings by allowing just two hits through the next four innings.
  • In extras, and a runner on second, Bridgewater took the lead on a sacrifice fly to right field that resulted in a close call at the plate, but the Eagles slid around the Hornets to score. Two consecutive singles, followed by a double put BC up 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth. Bridgewater retired the Hornets in order in the final half inning, locking up the win.
