Women Place Second, Men Place Fifth at Doc Jopson Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Both the men's and women's Shenandoah University outdoor track and field teams placed in the top five during the Doc Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College, which took place on Friday and Saturday. The women came in second and scored 103 team points, while the men finished fifth with 77 points.

FRIDAY RECAP

On the track during the first day of the meet, Ethan Harrower came in first during the 3000m steeplechase. Harrower ran a 9:54.56, with teammates Caleb Beiswenger and Noah Godfrey finishing fourth and seventh, respectively. The women's steeplechase saw Emma Madrigal have a time of 12:15.82 and come in eighth.

For the field, SU had Katya Hoover with the best placement on day one. Hoover, competing in the javelin, came in third and had a mark of 35.90m. Reginald Paterson III came in fifth for the men during the same event, hitting 43.82m.

Kiara Felston rounded out the opening day with a throw of 35.66m in the discus which placed her fourth.

SATURDAY RECAP

The Hornets had four first-place finishes on the second and final day of the invitational, both on the women's side.

Emma Nicely, Alexis Hubbard, Sarah Sidoro, and Kaitlyn Ruiz teamed together in the women's 4x400 relays and hit a time of 4:16.63 to take the top spot in the event. Madeline Lotts ran in the 1500m race and finished first with her time of 4:51.58. In the 800m, SU had Amy Oleksy make a first-place time of 2:27.09. Emma Madrigal was the other top performer, with her time of 19:26.48 in the women's 5000m. Lauren Tooman partook in the 5000m as well and placed fifth.

The men's side saw Wyatt Newcome, Noah Eglin, Charles Vakos, and William Crowder have a second place mark in the 4x100 relays. A second Hornets team consisting of Aymar Bisseck, Elijah West, Kristian Moore, and Christopher Smalls took home sixth place in the same relay. Newcome and Crowder also had other top-eight placements on the afternoon, as Newcome came in sixth in the 100m dash finals and Crowder ran a 22.39 to place fifth in the 200m.

For the women's 4x100, Alexis Hubbard, Janelle Anderson, Sarah Sidoro, and Kaitlyn Ruiz ran a time of 50.14, placing second. Anderson and Ruiz also made the finals of the 100m dash, with Anderson placing sixth and Ruiz wrapping up two spots behind Anderson. Sidoro also had an impressive placement in the women's 400m, where she placed second and ran a 1:01.14.

Staying on the track, Noah Hurd and Devin Kohout finished in fourth and seventh place, respectively, during the men's 1500m. Hurd had a time of 4:10.00 while Kohout finished at 4:11.96. Hurd took home the same spot in the 800m, with his time of 2:02.03 during that race.

Kohout wasn't done either with top-eight placements. He finished in sixth in the 5000m, as Caleb Beiswenger and Braden Maloy were in fifth and eighth place in the same event. Ethan Harrower had the best finish in the 5000m for Shenandoah, as he placed second with his time of 16:30.47.

Over on the field, Katya Hoover jumped 1.59m in the women's high jump for a third-place finish. Kiara Felston also had a third-place finish but in the hammer throw with a heave of 45.07m. For the men's hammer, Zak McIntyre and Reginald Patterson III each earned the men's side team points.

Mekhi Mims rounded out the weekend with a sixth-place jump of 1.83m in the men's high jump.

UP NEXT

The Hornets head to the University of Mary Washington next weekend for the Battleground Relays.
