WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University Hornets lacrosse team was back at home on Saturday afternoon for a tough conference matchup with the Roanoke Maroons. The Hornets (6-4, 2-1) fell to Roanoke by a score of 29-8.
Luke Petrie was the leading goal scorer for the Hornets with three goals, while
Matt Daniel chipped in with two goals and two assists.
Bradley Holt,
Caleb Kelley, and
Logan Clingerman were the other Hornets to find the back of the cage with Clingerman and
Clark Harrity picking up assists.
Mark Isabelle got the start in goal for Shenandoah and did all he could to keep his team in the game making 21 saves in the contest.
Jack Dwyer saw a majority of the fourth quarter and made three saves while
Ryan Feldman made his collegiate debut coming up with two saves of his own.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Roanoke won the opening faceoff and quickly fired four shots toward the Hornets. Mark Isabelle made two saves with the other two shots sailing wide and hitting off the post. Roanoke cashed in on their fifth opportunity just over a minute into the game.
- It only took 45 seconds for the lead to grow to 2-0. The Maroons won the draw and got two more shots off before scoring on the third.
- Four minutes into the game the lead grew to 3-0 before the Hornets put any pressure on the Maroon defense.
- With just over 8 minutes left in the first, Ryan Therkorn won the faceoff for the Hornets, but Roanoke's relentless pressure caused another turnover.
- Roanoke scored three more times to make it an 8-0 game before the Hornets finally got on the board with just under 3:30 left on the clock when Luke Petrie scored off an assist from Stephan Graham.
- That was the only goal the Hornets got in the first, as Roanoke added two more to make it a 10-1 game after the first quarter.
- In the second, Roanoke won the opening faceoff again, but after a save from Isabelle, the Hornets had a successful clear, and then Bradley Holt found the back of the cage off an assist from Dylan Pencek just under a minute into the quarter.
- Trying to use momentum off that goal to get back into the game, Roanoke went on to score five unanswered goals before the Hornets scored again.
- With just over 5 minutes to go in the half, Caleb Kelley scored his first of the season off the assist from Logan Clingerman to cut into the Maroon lead and make it 15-3.
- With just under two minutes to play in the half, Luke Petrie scored his second of the game off an assist from Matt Daniel.
- Roanoke added one more goal before the break, and the Maroons took a 17-4 lead into the half.
- Luke Petrie finished the hat trick early in the third off the assist from Clark Harrity before the Hornets got their first back-to-back goals when Clingerman found the back of the cage making it 18-6.
- The Hornet defense and Mark Isabelle did all they could to withstand the attack from Roanoke holding the Maroons scoreless over 10 minutes in the third. However, Roanoke added three more goals before the quarter ended.
- Jack Dwyer took over for Isabelle to start the fourth, but once again the Maroons got out to a fast start scoring eight seconds into the frame.
- 30 seconds later Matt Daniel scored off an assist from Graham to make it 22-7. Daniel scored the only man-up goal of the game for the Hornets a few minutes later as the game remained a 15-goal deficit.
- Roanoke added six more goals as they ran away with the game 29-8.

The Hornets have another difficult task on Wednesday night when the Washington and Lee Generals come to town for a conference showdown. That game is slated to start at 7 pm.
