Softball Sweeps Sweet Briar for First ODAC Wins of the Season

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - In a sweep of Sweet Briar College, the Shenandoah University softball team gained its first pair of ODAC wins this season on Wednesday in road action. The Hornets (10-14, 2-8 ODAC) scored a combined eight runs in the final three innings of game one to win 11-5. In game two, the Vixens (10-17, 3-11) jumped ahead 2-0 early, but SU rallied back and scored four runs in the third inning, taking the 4-2 victory.

GAME ONE RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Abigail Campbell (1-0)
Losing Pitcher - Ambyre Taylor (5-8)
Save - Meghan Gaskins

Top Numbers
Brenna Westwood - 3-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 run
Sarah Medellin - 3-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 run
Paige Eagleton - 2-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 1 3B, 1 SB
Danielle McNeill - 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Meghan Gaskins - 3.0 IP, 3 SO, 1 ER

How It Happened
  • Brenna Westwood was walked to put the first runner of the day on for Shenandoah in the first inning. A wild pitch and a passed ball advanced Westwood to third base with Danielle McNeill at the plate. McNeill grounded out but because of the two errant pitches, Westwood crossed the plate to make it 1-0 in favor of SU.
  • Starting pitcher, Kayla Stephenson allowed just one hit across the first two innings and didn't allow any walks, helping the score stay at 1-0. However, a leadoff home by Sweet Briar in the third, evened the game up, 1-1.
  • Shenandoah pulled ahead in the fourth inning with Rachael Blumensschine kicking the inning off with a single to center. Blumenschine turned on the jets and stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Makayla Boone singled, which still kept Blumenschine on third. Blumenschine finally scored on a Sarah Medellin single, making it 2-1 SU.
  • Allison McQueeney came to the plate in the same inning and hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Boone, making it 3-1 now. Sweet Briar pulled the game to within one run with a score in the bottom half of the inning.
  • In the fifth inning, SU scored its first of four runs in the frame thanks to a wild pitch, which scored Blumenschine and put Medellin on second. That same at-bat, Paige Eagleton found the gap in left center and landed a triple, plating Medellin.
  • A McNeill single scored Medellin later in the inning, extending SU's lead, 6-3. McNeill then successfully scored thanks to a Westwood single.
  • After the Vixens scored on in the fifth, SU once again put up a four spot, this time in the sixth. The scoring started on a Hannah Evans single, which plated Blumenschine. Eliza Hunt pinch ran for Evans and stole second. Eagleton drove in Hunt, making it 9-4. The final two runs for Shenandoah came on RBIs from McNeill and Westwood. Sweet Briar plated a run in the seventh inning but the 11-5 deficit was too much to overcome.

GAME TWO RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Savannah Thorne (3-3)
Losing Pitcher - Ambyre Taylor (5-9)

Top Numbers
Savannah Thorne - complete game, 7.0 IP, 1 SO, 2 ER
Allison McQueeney - 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 run
Tiffany Bower - 1-4, 1 RBI

How It Happened
  • The first six Shenandoah batters were sat down in order and the Vixens went down in order in the first inning. Sweet Briar singled to start the second inning, with the lead runner then stealing second. Another single put runners on the corners and Sweet Briar then scored first on a double steal, with the runner on third stealing home.
  • Shenandoah got the second out of the second inning on a solo effort from Paige Eagleton at first. With two outs now, Sweet Briar singled to right field to score another run and go ahead 2-0.
  • The Hornets loaded the bases in the third with no outs on two walks and a single. Savannah Thorne stood on third and Eagleton was on second, both were able to score and tie the game thanks to an Allison McQueeney center field single.
  • With bases loaded again, SU continued the inning with a Tiffany Bower single to left field, bringing home Danielle McNeill for the go-ahead run. Allison McQueeney stole home for the final run of the inning and the afternoon.
  • Jumping ahead to the seventh inning, Sweet Briar entered the inning down by two and down to its final three outs. The Vixens led off the frame with a single, which brought the tying run to the plate. Throne and the Hornets forced two ground outs and a pop fly to end the game, as Throne picked up the assist on both ground outs.
