Softball Swept by Roanoke in Weekend Conference Play

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by Roanoke College in an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on Henkel-Harris Field, which SU last played on in 2021 before moving to Rotary Field.

The Hornets (10-16, 2-10 ODAC) held a 5-1 lead in game two but the Maroons (17-7, 9-1) put five runs on the board in the sixth inning, helping them take the win. Roanoke took game one, 10-4, after jumping out to an early 6-0 lead.

GAME ONE RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Lindsay Gedro (6-4)
Losing Pitcher - Kayla Stephenson (2-5)

How It Happened
  • Each side went down in order to begin the game but in the second inning, Roanoke got on base with a single and a walk. A Hornets error helped the visitors strike first before another error at the plate made it 2-0. The Maroons then hit a single to left center for two more runs. A lead-off double in the third put Roanoke in a good spot to score again and two batters later, they did just that with a single up the middle.
  • In the fifth inning, with RC up 6-0, a double from Rachael Blumenschine put her and Lexie Reid in scoring position for the Hornets. Brenna Westwood singled to score Reid and Tiffany Bower drove in Blumenschine, making it 6-2. Roanoke went on to add four more runs heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the seventh, Taylor Smith drew a walk and was pinch-ran for by Eliza Hunt. Makayla Boone rocketed a double to left center to score Hunt and cut into SU's deficit. Blumenschine reentered the game as a pinch runner for Boone and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Westwood, making it 10-4. Roanoke ended the game with two outs in the infield.

GAME TWO RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Maggie McCray (6-0)
Losing Pitcher - Taylor Smith (2-4)

How It Happened
  • Down 1-0 in the fourth, Shenandoah gained its first hit of the game on a single up the middle from Brenna Westwood. Westwood advanced to second on a sac bunt and Tiffany Bower evened the game with an RBI double to left field, scoring Westwood.
  • In the fifth, Shenandoah broke open the game for the time being as Kelly Hartman and Rachael Blumenschine racked up back-to-back singles for the Hornets. Allison McQueeney reached base on an error and successfully scored pinch runner, Eliza Hunt, to put the Hornets up 2-1.
  • Another Roanoke error gave SU a two-run advantage and with runners on the corners, McQueeney scored on a wild pitch, ball four to put SU up 4-1. Savannah Thorne then singled to left field to plate Westwood and give SU a four-run cushion.
  • Roanoke came right back in the sixth and scored five runs in huge part to three Shenandoah errors and three extra-base hits. Up 6-5, the Maroons got five of the next six Shenandoah batters to strikeout and end the doubleheader.
