No. 8 R-MC Holds off Softball in Doubleheader Sweep

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team fell to No. 8 Randolph-Macon in a doubleheader, in large part to two late-inning rallies by the nationally ranked team on Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Hornets (10-18, 2-12 ODAC) tied the game in the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets (22-2-2, 13-1) put two runs on the board in the final inning to take the game one win. In the latter game of the doubleheader, R-MC was up by only one heading into the seventh and scored four more runs to take the 6-1 win.

GAME ONE RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Gracie Ellis (13-0)
Losing Pitcher - Meghan Gaskins (0-1)

Top Numbers
Tiffany Bower - 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 2B
Brenna Westwood - 2-3
Sarah Medellin - 1 RBI

How It Happened
  • In the second inning, Paige Eagleton got the first hit of the day with a double to left center. Kelly Hartman then stepped up to the plate and hit a blooper to center field to score Eagleton and put SU up 1-0 early against the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets.
  • Randolph-Macon drew a lead-off walk to begin the third and advanced the baserunner to second on a passed ball. A Hornets error helped put R-MC on the board to tie the game. The visitors then took the lead on a double that barely hit the line in right field. By the end of the third, the Yellow Jackets had a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fourth inning with a lead-off solo home run that dipped just below the scoreboard in left field.
  • Down to their final six outs, and down 4-1, the Hornets needed a comeback and were helped out by an Allison McQueeney lead-off single. McQueeney then stole second and was pushed to third on a single from Brenna Westwood. The two of them crossed the plate on a Tiffany Bower double to the wall in center, bringing SU within one.
  • Eliza Hunt came on to run for Bower and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kara Watkins. Sarah Medellin came in as a pinch runner and saw one pitch and drove a ball that was caught just inches away from the wall in left field, but successfully drove in Hunt to tie the game, 4-4.
  • Two walks in the seventh inning put two on the bases for R-MC. The two runners advanced on a passed ball and the lead runner then scored on a wild pitch. The Yellow Jackets then took a 6-4 lead on a single back to the pitcher.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, R-MC ended the game with a ground out and two punch outs.

GAME TWO RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Rilee Baughn (9-2)
Losing Pitcher - Abigail Campbell (1-1)

Top Numbers
Allison McQueeney - 1-4, 1 run
Meghan Gaskins - 1-1, 1 2B

How It Happened
  • Allison McQueeney led off the game on an error by the R-MC first baseman. Brenna Westwood got down a bunt to advance McQueeney and then McQueeney stole third. "Speedy McQueeney" then scored on a wild pitch. SU led 1-0 at the end of one.
  • In the fourth, R-MC tied the game on a single and an RBI double down the right field line with two outs. Another two-out double in the fifth inning put R-MC up, 2-1.
  • In the sixth, Shenandoah had a chance to tie the game with Westwood standing on third and just one out. Sarah Medellin drew a walk to put runners on the corners but a pop-up to foul territory and a ground out to second ended the Hornets' hopes.
  • In the seventh, Randolph-Macon took a 3-1 lead with four consecutive singles to start the inning. R-MC had the bases loaded with no outs and Danille McNeill ended the threat for a moment by throwing out the lead runner at the plate. However, R-MC added two more runs with a single and a walk. Another bases-loaded single made it a 6-1 lead for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Meghan Gaskins hit a lead-off double through the right side to begin the bottom of the seventh but the Yellow Jackets got the next three batters out to conclude the doubleheader.
