Hornets Rally Back for Sweep at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - In a pair of comeback wins, and behind five Sarah Medellin RBIs, the Shenandoah University softball team swept Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday afternoon in ODAC play on the road.

In game one, the Hornets (12-18, 4-12 ODAC) came back from a 5-4 deficit and scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Meghan Gaskins came in and pitched the final two innings of the opening contest to pick up the save in the 7-5 victory. In game two, after SU took a 1-0 lead, the Royals (9-16, 5-11) jumped out to a 7-1 lead. SU rallied back and put together 11 runs in the final three innings, including a six-run sixth, to take the win, 12-9.

GAME ONE RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Abigail Campbell (2-1)
Losing Pitcher - Makayla Cyzick (7-10)
Save - Meghan Gaskins (2)

Top Numbers
Paige Eagleton - 3-4, 2 3B, 1 RBI, 1 run
Brenna Westwood - 4-4, 1 run
Tiffany Bower - 1-1, 3 BB
Abigail Campbell - 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 hit allowed
Meghan Gaskins - 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 hit allowed

How It Happened
  • Across the first two innings, the Hornets racked up two lead-off hits including a triple by Paige Eagleton. However, EMU recorded two straight strikeouts and forced SU to pop up a bunt to end the inning and leave Eagleton stranded 60 feet from home.
  • Shenandoah made up for leaving Eagleton stranded and opened up the scoring in the third. Brenna Westwood singled to left center and then stole second. Westwood successfully advanced to third on a passed ball. Tiffany Bower drew a walk to put runners on the corners and bring Sarah Medellin to the plate. Medellin doubled and drove in Westwood and put herself and Bower in scoring position.
  • Eagleton came to the plate with the two runners in scoring position and lined a single through the right side, which should've resulted in just one run crossing the plate. However, luckily for SU, there was an error by the right fielder and Eagleton was able to race around the bases to score. The EMU error helped SU go up 4-0 in the middle of the third.
  • The Royals responded well and loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning without an out on the board. With the bases loaded EMU scored on an infield play which turned into a Hornets' error, plating one more and making it 4-2.
  • With two runners now on for the home team, the Royals took one swing and changed the momentum of the contest with a three-run home run to left center. EMU now led 5-4 at the end of the third.
  • Danielle McNeill walked to start the fourth and stole second. Rachael Blumenschine tied the contest with a double which scored McNeill. Blumenschine advanced to third on a Westwood single, which Westwood then stole second, putting two in scoring position for the Hornets. Momentum swung back to the SU dugout with an RBI single from Allison McQueeney to put them back on top, 6-5.
  • Shenandoah was able to continue the inning and loaded the bases. With two outs, SU once again capitalized on an EMU error with McQueeney able to come home on a throwing error by the Royals' catcher.
  • Abigail Campbell came in to pitch for Shenandoah in the bottom of the fourth and walked the lead-off batter. Her teammates had her back though and successfully turned an inning-ending double play to keep the Hornets up, 7-5, at the end of the fourth.
  • With SU now up, Campbell shut down the Royals in the fifth inning which was helped out by a diving catch by Tiffany Bower at shortstop, who went flying to her left to make the spectacular grab which saved a run.
  • Shenandoah switched pitchers in the sixth and called upon Meghan Gaskins to get the final six outs. She did the job and recorded the final six outs with one strikeout, which ended the sixth, and three flyouts in the final frame.

GAME TWO RECAP

Winning Pitcher - Meghan Gaskins (1-1)
Losing Pitcher - Makayla Cyzick (7-11)

Top Numbers
Sarah Medellin - 3-3, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 1 3B
Allison McQueeney - 2-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB
Meghan Gaskins - first career win, 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 hits allowed, 1 BB

How It Happened
  • Shenandoah went down in order in the first and EMU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. However, with two outs, Savannah Thorne struck out the final batter of the inning to get out of the jam.
  • Sarah Medellin stepped up to the plate to begin the second and launched a ball over the fence in left field to put Shenandoah up, 1-0. EMU got out of the half inning only down by one after striking out the next three SU batters.
  • In the third inning, after a lead-off ground out, the Royals loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. The next two Royals' batters singled to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team.
  • With bases still loaded, EMU gained another single to make it 3-1. Then in back-to-back at-bats, EMU lined two hits just over the third base bag to put them up 7-1 heading to the fourth.
  • Shenandoah didn't back down and began the fourth with an Allison McQueeney single up the middle. McQueeney attempted to steal second and was called safe on obstruction by the EMU shortstop. The Hornets' shortstop, Tiffany Bower, drew a walk to put two runners on. Medellin pushed the runners to second and third on a sac bunt and both were able to score on two straight EMU errors. Makayla Cox hit a ball to center field which was far enough back to score Paige Eagleton on a sacrifice fly. SU now trailed 7-4.
  • In the fifth, the Hornets popped up for the first two outs in the inning, but sandwiched between the outs were singles from Brenna Westwood and McQueeney. Medellin came to the plate again and lined a triple to left center, which scored Westwood and McQueeney to make it 7-6, still in favor of EMU. In the bottom of the inning, EMU increased its lead to 9-6.
  • The next inning was nothing short of amazing for SU. With two outs and two runners on for SU, EMU walked Westwood to load the bases. McQueeney singled to cut the Hornets deficit down to two. Bower followed up McQueeney's at-bat with another RBI single.
  • Medellin played hero one final time in the contest by racking up another RBI on a single to center field which then resulted in an EMU error which helped put SU back up, 10-9.
  • Shenandoah wasn't done yet as Eagleton came to the plate and hit a two-RBI double which scored Shannon Keeney and Eliza Hunt and gave Shenandoah a 12-9 lead.
  • Meghan Gaskins, who came in to pitch in the fifth, went back out to the circle in the sixth and allowed just one walk but got the other three batters of the inning out. Those three outs proved to be the final outs of the game as the umpires and coaches came together and called the game due to darkness.
