Softball Swept By No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was swept by No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in an ODAC home doubleheader.

The Hornets (12-20, 4-14 ODAC) were held scoreless in the game one loss to the Marlins (24-7, 14-2) and then in game two, VWU held them to just one hit in a 9-1 loss.

GAME ONE RECAP

  • Three hits and a Hornets error helped Virginia Wesleyan find the score column three times in the first inning to go ahead 3-0. Kayla Stephenson and the Hornets rebounded in the second inning and retired the Marlins in order to keep the score where it was.
  • In innings three, four, and five the Marlins would score one run in each of the frames. In the third and fifth, VWU scored its runs on singles to the outfield while in the fourth a wild pitch helped them find the plate.
  • In the third, SU gained its only extra-base hit of the afternoon on a double from Kelly Hartman. However, a strikeout and a groundout left Hartman stranded. In the fourth, Allison McQueeney picked up a lead-off single to get on base and advanced to third on two outs in the infield. A ground out to end the inning left McQueeney at third.
  • In the sixth, VWU crossed the plate three times to go ahead, 9-0. They ended the game by forcing SU to ground out three times in the bottom half of the inning.

GAME TWO RECAP

  • After two errors a single, VWU put two runners in scoring position on a wild pitch. Both came home to score on a single to left field. The Marlins led 2-0 at the end of one.
  • Savannah Thorne kept the game at 2-0 after throwing three straight scoreless innings for the Hornets. But in the fifth, the Marlins hit a lead-off double and drew two straight walks to load the bases. Tiffany Bower got the initial out, as she threw home to get the lead runner. A single scored two Marlins to put them up 4-0.
  • With bases loaded again, VWU went up 5-0 on a hit-by pitch and added another run on a fielder's choice with an error.
  • Kelly Hartman was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the inning to get on base and advanced to third on two straight wild pitches. Rachael Blumenschine drew a walk to put runners on the corners and Hartman then scored on a wild pitch, which pushed Blumenschine to second. Brenna Westwood got on base with another walk in the inning and Blumenschine ran to third as the fourth ball was wild. The Hornets stopped there as a strikeout ended the inning.
  • The Marlins scored three more times in the game and once again got SU to ground out three straight times to end the contest.
